HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 955

"I'm sure," he said quietly, "he'll be happy to hear that."

But deep down, Cale knew that words of thanks alone would never be enough to repay someone who had been willing to risk his life to bring Lydia to safety and save her.

"But more than anything, Lydia," Cale shifted slightly in his seat. Slowly, his fingers reached out to gently brush the strands of hair that had fallen across Lydia's cheek back into place. "I'm so grateful you survived. I almost lost my mind thinking I was about to lose you."

Cale's voice was quiet and trembling, and the look in his eyes was filled with despair.

Unconsciously, tears slipped down Lydia's cheeks. What Cale had felt was exactly what she had felt as well. What if...

Cale let out a long breath. His gaze slowly dropped to Lydia's hand, still resting in his own. There were several small cuts across it, and the sight only made him feel even more guilty.

"I kept thinking," he said softly, "what if I was too late."

He swallowed against the lump in his throat. "What if, by the time I found you," he paused. His breathing and voice grew even more unsteady. "you were already gone."

The last sentence was almost inaudible. Yet because he spoke it so softly, every word struck Lydia's heart even harder.

"I kept telling myself that you'd be okay." He slowly shook his head. "But the longer I went without finding you, the more I started to lose that belief."

He looked at Lydia again. The gaze that had always seemed so calm was now filled with fear that had not yet truly faded.

"I was so scared, my love."

Cale leaned forward and embraced Lydia with the utmost care, making sure not to touch her injuries. The embrace was so gentle, as though he were holding the most precious thing in his life, terrified that even the slightest bit of extra strength might break it.

Lydia tried to return her husband's embrace, though it was difficult because of the IV line in her hand. She could feel her husband's body trembling as he held her. Then... her shoulder became damp.

Their tears broke free at the same time. Lydia buried her face against the man's chest, while Cale closed his eyes, letting his tears fall freely into his wife's hair.

"I'm here," Lydia whispered between her sobs. "I'm not going anywhere anymore."
