Morning arrived with streaks of light slowly slipping through the gap in the hospital room curtains. The warmth of the sunlight fell across the white blanket, while the sound of nurses' footsteps as they began their shifts could only be faintly heard from beyond the door.
Naomi slowly opened her eyes.
For the first few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling without moving. Her awareness gradually returned, followed by the lingering pain around her surgical wound whenever she took too deep a breath. But compared to the agony she had felt before everything went dark, the pain was far more bearable.
At least she could still feel it. Naomi let out a quiet breath. The corners of her lips unconsciously lifted into a faint smile. She was truly still alive.
Slowly, she turned her head to the side. Last night, she had assumed Chris had only been trying to reassure her when he said he would stay at the hospital. Once Naomi had fallen asleep, he must have gone home to rest. After all, for the past seven days, Chris had barely had any time for himself.
But the moment her gaze fell on the corner of the room, Naomi fell silent.
Chris was still there.
He was asleep on a sofa that was clearly too short for his body. His head rested against the back of the sofa in a position that was obviously uncomfortable. He was still wearing the same shirt as yesterday, only now it looked slightly wrinkled. A laptop on the small table was still on, while several files and documents lay scattered beside it, as though he had forced himself to finish his work the night before until exhaustion had finally overtaken him.
Naomi watched him for a long moment. Something tightened painfully in her chest. How could he possibly sleep so soundly in such an uncomfortable position?
The door to the room slowly opened.
A nurse entered, pushing a small cart filled with medication for the morning examination. The moment she saw Naomi awake, a relieved smile spread across her face.
"Good morning, Miss Naomi. How are you feeling this morning?"
"Much better," Naomi replied softly. Her gaze still hadn't left Chris's sleeping figure. After hesitating for a moment, she finally asked, "Did... he really not go home?"
The nurse followed Naomi's gaze, then smiled knowingly. "No."
Naomi looked back at her.
"We suggested several times that Mr. Chris go home and get some rest," the nurse continued gently. "But he refused every time."
"Really?"
The nurse nodded.
