One after another, Ethan Hale’s name flowed from her pen in a bold, sweeping script.
Mia Carter had beautiful handwriting-strong and elegant.
When her fingers grew stiff from the effort, she paused to rub them, staring blankly at the sea of eye-searing red
invitations. There were hundreds of them. It would take her at least an entire day to finish.
Nearby, Zoe Parker sat dazed at her desk. The budget for the engagement party was making her question her entire existence. An eight-figure budget for a single party-the loose change from this event was more than Zoe would
earn in her entire lifetime.
More importantly, she had found several loopholes.
With just a slight nudge of her finger, she could pocket an unimaginable amount of profit.
She swallowed hard, looking back at Mia and then at the others. After confirming no one was watching, she quickly tore the page out of the budget folder and stuffed it into her pocket.
The test of her conscience left her restless and uncharacteristically quiet.
Mia remained buried in her work until lunch. She was about to order takeout just to get it over with, completely
oblivious to Zoe’s strange behavior.
Before she could decide what to eat, Ruby Foster stepped out of the elevator and quietly hurried to her side.
Mia, are you off the clock yet?”
Ruby? Yes, I was just about to order a sandwich or something.” Mia looked up. “Do you want to join me?”
Ruby grabbed her wrist and pulled her up. “Takeout isn’t healthy. Come on, let’s go out to eat.”
As Mia was hauled to her feet, Ruby reached over and grabbed Mia’s coat and bag for her.
Mia could only follow. “I still have work to finish this afternoon.”
Don’t worry, it’s just one meal. It won’t take long.” Ruby draped Mia’s brown coat over her shoulders. “They don’t
ay you for working through lunch. If you don’t finish, just do it tonight!”
Mia didn’t care about overtime pay; she just wanted to get everything done as quickly as possible.
Minutes later, Ruby led her into the Downtown Steakhouse in the commercial district.
What made you want to eat Western food today?”
Mia let herself be led to table four by the window.
The problem was, a man was already sitting across from them.
This is Ian Reed, my nephew. He’s two years older than you.”
Ruby didn’t sit down. She introduced them to each other. “Ian, this is Mia Carter, the girl I told you about. She’s incredibly capable.”
It clicked in Mia’s head instantly. She remembered Ruby mentioning a blind date before.

I know you’re busy, so I won’t stay and disturb you.” Ruby patted her shoulder, cutting her off. “One meal is enough time to get to know each other.”
an had regular features. He wasn’t exactly handsome, but he had the refined, scholarly air of an honest man.
He nodded to Ruby. “Go ahead. I’ll try not to take up too much of Mia’s time.”
Ruby shot Mia a meaningful look, grabbed her bag, and left.
Mia sat there, feeling incredibly awkward with a baby in her womb while on a blind date. But her manners were oo well-ingrained to let her just walk out. She had no choice but to stay.
Let me introduce myself. I’m Ian Reed. I graduated from Redwood University and interned abroad for a year. Since returning, I’ve successfully interviewed at Vanguard and will be starting officially soon.”
an gave a polite self-introduction.
Hello. I’m Mia Carter.” Mia had never been on a blind date before. She responded out of politeness but didn’t
