Chapter 139
Mia Carter froze, instinctively shrinking further into the shadows.
In the dimly lit parking lot, a mother and son stood beside a Maybach. The car door was halfway open; it looked like Miranda Hale had intercepted Ethan Hale just as he was about to get in.
Ethan stood inside the door frame, his wrist resting on the edge, his back to Mia. She couldn’t see his face, but his deep, low voice echoed clearly through the space.
“You guys find her an eyesore. Why wait to get rid of her?”
Miranda stared at him for a long time, trying to read something-anything-on his aristocratic face. But she found nothing.
Still, she wasn’t at ease. “Chloe is indeed spoiled. That’s partly my fault. She can’t help you in your career, but she has a much better background than Mia. You… you must never betray her!”
After a heavy silence, two words escaped Ethan’s thin lips: “I won’t.”
Those two short words weighed down on Mia’s heart, stealing the breath from her lungs. Her breathing hitched, and she pressed herself tight against the cold wall, her hand gripping the file so hard the paper crumpled.
A moment later, the sound of a car engine roared to life. Mia looked up and saw Miranda drive away.
Ethan was still in the same position, one leg on the car’s running board. Mia quickly composed herself and walked out slowly.
‘Mr. Hale, these are the documents Mr. Martinez asked me to give you.”
Ethan turned his head. His gaze fell on her outstretched hand. Her fingers were long and clean, looking even paler gainst the white paper. Her fingertips were bloodless, and the spot where she had gripped the file was a wrinkled
ness.
Ethan’s brow furrowed. As he took the file, he shot her a look.
I thought you would have finalized your decision by now, Ms. Carter.”
His tone was mocking. He seemed surprised that someone so desperate to leave was still lingering.
Mia’s hands fell back to her sides. “Don’t worry, Mr. Hale. I won’t be an eyesore much longer.”
Ethan’s narrow eyes squinted. He watched her finish speaking and turn to walk away. He tossed the file onto the >assenger seat and pulled at his tie. While watching her retreating figure in the rearview mirror, he started the engine and slammed on the gas.
The car shot forward like an arrow, whistling past Mia.
Mia gave
the receding taillights a flat look before stopping in front of the elevator. As the roar of the engine faded and silence returned to the parking lot, her heart remained a chaotic mess.
She didn’t let it show on her face. She stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the third floor.
With the engagement party over, Group 16 was disbanded, and the staff was redistributed to various teams. Mia
eturned to Team 8.

As soon as she walked into the department, Kevin Brooks assigned her a task. She didn’t have time to look at the
esignation clauses; she had to focus on work.
t wasn’t until she got home that evening and pulled out the separation agreement that she finally had time to read
Clause: No private contact with any clients encountered during her tenure at Bayview.*
Clause: No disclosure of Bayview’s internal secrets; failure to comply results in astronomical breach of contract
>enalties.
Mia could accept those. But it was the final item that stopped her cold.
‘Clause: After resignation, Mia Carter is prohibited from working for any enterprise in direct competition with Bayview Holdings.”
This meant Mia would have to jump completely out of her comfort zone and start from scratch. Her years of experience would be worthless in a different industry.
This is a joke! He’s trying to make things difficult for you so you can’t leave!” Nina Torres said, nearly slamming her hand on the table. “This is an unfair contract!”
Mia bit her lower lip, her brow knotted as she scanned the clauses again. She searched for any loophole, any word she could twist to find a glimmer of hope for her future career.
