Chapter 156

“It was that Mr. Rivers you know,” Aunt May explained. “He had her moved. He said the child needs a better

environment to recover.”

It was a VIP Ward. In addition to the hospital bed, there was a cot for a caregiver. The room was fully furnished with a small sofa, a table, and even a TV. It was quiet and felt more like a home; the environment was indeed much better.

This…” Nina said instinctively. “Must cost a fortune, right?”

The fee for this ward was at least ten times higher than a standard room.

‘Mr. Rivers said he’d cover the room costs. We… you guys just handle the medical bills.” Aunt May opened the unch boxes and began setting them out.

Mia walked to the bedside and looked at Carly, who was wearing a small black hat. “We’re indoors, Carly. Why are you wearing a hat?”

As she spoke, she realized the girl’s eyes were bloodshot. “What’s wrong?”

Carly sniffled, tears immediately welling up. “Aunt May cut off all my hair.”

Mia froze. She lifted a corner of the hat. The once dark, shiny hair was gone, leaving her head completely bald.

What are you crying for?” Aunt May said, sitting down. “Didn’t I tell you? We’re sick, so we have to cut the hair. Otherwise, it’ll all fall out on its own and get everywhere.”

Carly hung her head, weeping silently.

Be a good girl, Carly. Hair grows back.” Mia pulled out a tissue and wiped the girl’s tears.

But it takes so long to grow.” Large teardrops fell one by one.

Mia comforted her softly. “I’ll buy you a wig another day. One that’s even longer than your old hair. You can wear t all the time until your real hair grows back to its original length, okay?”

Carly finally stopped crying. “Really?”

Of course.” Mia nodded.

Aunt May chimed in from the side. “The hair I cut only sold for $200. If you buy a wig, you’re just throwing more

noney away…”

You sold her hair?” Nina snapped, annoyed. “I told you, her hair wouldn’t fall out this fast even with chemo!”

Carly pursed her lips and lowered her head, staying silent.

‘It was going to fall out sooner or later! If I waited until it started falling, I couldn’t sell it!” Aunt May shifted the topic. “I only did it to help pay for her treatment. Every little bit counts!”

Seeing that they were about to start a shouting match, Mia covered Carly’s ears and signaled to Nina. “Nina.”

She gave a subtle shake of her head.

Nina suppressed her anger and forced a smile, walking over to Carly.

‘Fine. Carly, listen to me. I’ll buy you a wig too. I’ll get a curly one to match your name. I’ll buy two, and you can switch between them…”

With both of them coaxing her, Carly finally broke into a smile.

Mia encouraged her to eat, and she managed quite a bit. But the back of Carly’s hand was covered in frightening >ruises from all the IV needles. The girl, who had always been quiet, had become even more withdrawn after staying in the hospital for so long.
