Chapter 163
“Whoa!”
Jaxon Rivers saw things going south and reacted instantly, standing up and catching Mia Carter’s body with both
hands.
Mia’s heart hammered against her ribs as she landed in his arms, his hands firmly supporting her lower back. She held her breath, not even daring to exhale properly, the shock of the near-fall still rattling her.
“We finally managed to get out under the guise of work-why are you in such a rush to leave?” Jaxon had been scared half to death. “It’s not like I’m going to eat you!”
Mia steadied her nerves, using the strength in his wrists to push herself back up to a standing position. Lingering fear mixed with a surge of annoyance, making her cheeks flush a deep red.
“Can you be serious for once?”
Seeing that she was genuinely angry, Jaxon clicked his tongue but quickly forced another grin. Just as he was about to drop another joke, he caught sight of two figures at the door.
His smile faltered for a fraction of a second before becoming even more radiant.
“Women love bad boys, don’t they? You don’t like my type, Secretary Carter? Then what do you like? The ‘upright gentleman’ type like Ethan Hale? The cold, ascetic kind?”
Mia’s head throbbed at the mention of Ethan. She was desperate to distance herself from any connection to him.
“His type? I like it even less!”
Jaxon’s grin stretched from ear to ear. He sat back down and looked toward the entrance, pretending he had just noticed them.
“Oh, Mr. Hale! What a coincidence. You didn’t happen to hear what Secretary Carter just said, did you?”
Mia smoothed out her dress, but her body went rigid at his words. She slowly turned around.
Ethan stood at the entrance of the private room. In front of him sat Chloe Bennett in her wheelchair. Chloe looked startled, her eyes darting to Ethan to gauge his reaction.
“I heard you were here discussing work. I thought I’d drop by and see how it was going.”
Ethan had one hand on Chloe’s wheelchair and the other tucked in his pocket. He acted as if he hadn’t heard Mia’s comment at all.
Jaxon studied him with a meaningful look. “We were indeed discussing work. Don’t misunderstand, Mr. Hale. What happened just now… was just a little interlude.”
He spoke with a gloating tone, deliberately framing things to make Mia’s explanation sound like she was trying to hide something.
Mia stood there, her gaze fixed on a random point in the room, her brow slightly furrowed.
“How is the work coming along?” Ethan’s gaze bore directly into Mia’s face.

Mia took a step away from Jaxon. “We’re just waiting for the Riverside team to arrive.”
Ethan’s expression turned grim.
‘Ethan,” Chloe cut in at the perfect moment, gently tugging on his arm. “You’ve already handed the project to Mia. You should give her enough authority and space. Don’t worry so much. I’m hungry anyway-let’s go eat.”
Ethan lowered his eyes, his voice softening. “Okay.”
He pulled his hand back from Chloe’s grasp to grip the wheelchair, preparing to turn away.
But Jaxon spoke up again. “We haven’t even touched the food on this table yet. If you don’t mind, Mr. Hale, why don’t you join us? Since we’re partners on this Government Partnership Initiative, we should let bygones be bygones and turn our swords into plowshares…”
Afraid Ethan wouldn’t stay, Jaxon stood up and blocked the wheelchair’s path. He lowered his posture, offering an apology for his past behavior and insisting Ethan take a seat. He even offered up the head of the table.
Mia’s head was buzzing. Her body felt tight and strained at the sound of Jaxon’s voice. She was terrified that his next sentence would be, ‘Mia’s pregnant, and the baby is yours.”
She couldn’t be blamed for the leap in logic-Jaxon was a wildcard.
Under Jaxon’s persistent urging, Ethan finally sat down with Chloe. He kept a cold, stony face as he began serving Food to Chloe, completely ignoring Jaxon’s incessant chatter.
