Upon returning to the company, she headed straight for the CEO’s office on the top floor.

As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she ran into Leo Martinez.

‘Ms. Carter, Mr. Hale wants you in the conference room.”

Mia checked her watch. There was a high-level routine meeting at 4:00 PM that would last at least two hours.

‘Leo, are you busy later?”

‘I’m in the meeting with Mr. Hale.” Leo patted his files, which were ready for the session.

Mia pulled out a voice recorder. “Take this in with you. I’ll pick it up after the meeting, summarize the notes, and send them to Mr. Hale’s inbox before the end of the day.”

She had a mountain of work waiting for her downstairs.

Leo knew she was swamped. He took the recorder and muttered, “Mr. Hale is something else, making you work wo jobs that are practically impossible to balance.”

‘Thanks.”

Mia gave him a small smile and turned back to the elevators.

She had only been back in her office for a short while when the internal line rang.

‘Come up.”

Ethan’s magnetic voice was low and husky, dripping with dissatisfaction.

Mia’s hand tightened around her pen. She set her work aside and went back upstairs.

She knocked on Ethan’s office door.

‘Come in.”

Mia pushed the door open.

Ethan was wearing gold-rimmed glasses. Beneath the lenses, his hawk-like eyes flickered up to look at her.

After just one glance, his focus returned to the screen in front of him.

‘Why were you absent from the meeting?”

The intensity of that single look made Mia’s throat tighten. She cleared her voice.

“There are some tricky parts of the Government Partnership Initiative that need to be revised quickly. Since we’re collaborating with Riverside, it’s not convenient to keep them waiting too long.”

The corner of Ethan’s mouth twitched. “Is it because you’re afraid the Riverside team will wait too long, or do you

want to use business as an excuse to see Jaxon Rivers more often?”

His tone sounded like a question, but he had already slapped the label of “using business for personal gain” onto Mia.
