What’s there to see in the warehouse?”
Aunt May grabbed her arm. “Go inside and keep Carly company. She’s been in a bad mood ever since she got back. She still hasn’t been eating properly.”
Mia Carter took one last look toward the warehouse. Hearing Aunt May mention Carly’s mood, she finally
hanged her direction.
Because of her illness, Carly had a room to herself.
She was wearing a white knit hat and a pink thermal set, sitting on the bed and staring out the window.
Mia waved to her through the glass.
The little girl forced a smile, but it lacked the innocent radiance she used to have.
Carly, you’re home now. Why are you still unhappy?”
Mia sat on the edge of the bed and watched the small girl curled up by the windowsill. She reached out her hand, esturing for her to come over.
Carly crawled over and lay her head in Mia’s lap.
Mia, when can I go back to school?”
At the hospital, Carly had been miserable, longing to go home. Now that she was home, she longed to go back to chool and return to a normal life.
You’ll be back soon.”
Mia stroked her head. Through the thin knit hat, she could feel the faint prickle of new hair growth.
Carly’s eyes remained dull, devoid of hope.
Even though you’re not in school, we still have to study hard, okay? Your teacher sends the recorded lessons every lay. You need to watch them all carefully.”
Mia changed the subject. “That’s the only way you can stay number one when you go back.”
Carly nodded. “I’ve been watching them carefully. If you don’t believe me, you can test me, Mia.”
Then I’ll do just that.”
Mia asked a few questions, and Carly answered them all correctly.
Mia pulled a handmade fruit chew from her pocket. “This is your reward. I’ll be back to check on your progress next time, and I’ll bring you something else then.”
Carly’s eyes brightened slightly as she took the candy. “Mia, are you leaving already? Aren’t you staying for lunch with us?”
‘No.” Mia shook her head. She planned to head over to Nina Torres’s place.
She hadn’t seen her godson in a few days and missed him terribly.

After cheering Carly up, she left.
Aunt May watched her leave through the kitchen window but said nothing.
Only after Mia’s car had driven out of the orphanage did the kitchen curtain lift.
Aunt May, who was that?”
Zoe Parker walked in, pretending she didn’t know who Mia was.
Aunt May didn’t even look up. “Another one who grew up in this orphanage.”

Oh?” Zoe acted surprised. “She looks so polished and successful. Our orphanage actually produced someone like
hat?”
