Chloe scanned the ballroom for Richard Vance. “Mr. Vance brought two people with him. Which one is the one dating Secretary Carter?”

Ethan’s gaze landed unerringly on lan Reed. But he simply said, “Is that so? I’m not sure.”

He began walking toward the exit.

“The whole company is talking about it. Ethan, how could you not know?”

Chloe hurried to keep up with him. But no matter what she said, Ethan only responded in short, detached phrases.

“I don’t know.” “I’m not sure.” “Is that so?”

A few minutes later, they were in the car. Mia started the engine and pulled into the flow of traffic.

The interior of the car was silent. The faint scent of tobacco and alcohol clung to Ethan, gradually filling the space. He sat by the window, his gaze fixed on the night scenery flying past.

“Secretary Carter.”

Chloe was the first to break the silence.

Mia looked in the rearview mirror. “Ms. Bennett, is something wrong?”

‘I heard you’re dating someone from Vanguard. Is it true?”

Chloe watched Ethan’s expression out of the corner of her eye. Mia hadn’t expected her to ask such a personal question. Seeing her covertly checking Ethan’s reaction, Mia mused for a moment before saying, “We haven’t reached that stage yet.”

The ambiguous answer sounded like a denial to Chloe. “You mean, you’re just not ready to go public yet?”

At a red light, Mia stepped on the brakes. The seconds ticked by. Just before the light turned green, Mia let out a single syllable from her throat. “Mm.”

Having received the answer she wanted, Chloe smiled with satisfaction. “I saw him earlier. He’s quite handsome.”

Ethan remained silent, but a suffocating, oppressive aura began to spread through the car.

Chloe didn’t notice it.

But Mia felt as if the air was being sucked out of the space, making it difficult to breathe. She echoed Chloe’s

words. “Is that so?”

‘Of course.” Chloe laughed and looked at Ethan. “Though, of course, he’s not as handsome as Ethan.”

Mia nodded. “True. He can’t be compared to Mr. Hale.”

Ethan’s expression didn’t reveal his emotions. He continued to stare out the window, showing no reaction to their conversation. Chloe felt a bit slighted; she could tell Mia was just humoring her in a professional manner, and Ethan was completely ignoring her.

As Chloe fell silent, the atmosphere in the car became even more still.
