Mia had actually forgotten about that part.
And she hadn’t realized that Ethan had resolved the situation in this way.
She didn’t reply to Leo’s message because she didn’t know what to say.

Since it was still early, the two went to the Orphanage.
‘You’re finally here! That temporary worker left without a word last time, leaving me completely overwhelmed.”
Aunt May pointed at a pile of dirty laundry outside in the yard. “Mia, go wash these quickly. It’s not cold anymore, so do it by hand to save on the electricity bill.”
Nina chimed in, “She’s pregnant.”
Aunt May froze, her expression souring. “I forgot. Then you do it.”
I’m not doing it either. I’m still in my nursing period.” Nina pulled Mia toward the house. “We’re here to see Carly. ‘ll help you keep an eye on the other kids; go do the laundry yourself.”
Aunt May followed them, annoyed. “I’m this old, and you’re making me work?”
Nina pushed Mia inside. “You’re going through menopause. If you’ve got anger with nowhere to put it, you should ind a place to vent that extra energy. Otherwise, what? Are you going to take it out on the kids while we’re not
round?”
As she spoke, the two entered the room, and Nina slammed the door shut.
Aunt May was left outside, Nina’s final words echoing in her ears.
Her throat tightened, but she didn’t push the door open.
Through the window, Mia saw Aunt May go to the yard to wash the clothes.
She sat down next to Carly and took the girl’s small hand. “Carly, how have you been lately?”
Much better lately. I can eat, drink, and jump around.” Carly looked significantly better.
The peach fuzz of black hair was even starting to grow back on her previously bald head.
Nina shot a look out the window before smiling at Carly. “You’re doing that well? I heard that medication usually nakes you lose your appetite.”
‘I haven’t been taking medicine,” Carly said, a rare smile on her face. “Aunt May said I don’t need it anymore.”
Mia and Nina exchanged a look, both seeing the shock in each other’s eyes.
When she was discharged, the doctor had clearly stated she couldn’t stop the medication.
Nina stood up. I’m going to check outside.”
Mia nodded and stayed with Carly, her gaze fixed on the window.

‘Did you stop Carly’s medicine?” Nina asked bluntly. “The doctor said you can’t stop it without permission.”
Aunt May threw a shirt into the washing machine and glanced at Nina. “I didn’t stop it.”
‘Carly said she stopped.”
‘She’s just a kid complaining about not wanting to take medicine. I crushed the pills and mixed them into her food.”
Aunt May was dismissive. “You don’t take care of children; how would you understand?”
Nina said, “Just don’t stop her meds.”
Why would I stop them?” Aunt May waved her off. “Go check the kitchen. I have water boiling.”
Seeing her busy, Nina turned and went into the kitchen.
The moment she left, Aunt May dropped the laundry, wiped her hands on her clothes, and ran toward the room
where Mia was.
Nina had been in a hurry and hadn’t closed the door. Aunt May pulled back the curtain and entered. Before she could speak, she heard Mia chatting with Carly.
Don’t worry. Even after I leave, I’ll come back to see you regularly. Take your medicine like a good girl and wait or a suitable bone marrow transplant. You’ll be completely healthy after that. Then you can go back to school, raduate college in a few years, and once you’re making money, you can come find me. How does that sound?”
Carly’s voice was full of reluctance. “Mia, where exactly are you going? Do you have to leave?”
Before Mia could answer, Aunt May burst in. “You’re leaving even though you have no money?”
