MAINE
Mia remained silent for a moment. “We gave you all our money. We have nothing left right now.”
Impossible,” Aunt May blurted out without thinking. “Didn’t you just get a large bonus a few days ago?”
She actually knew about Mia’s bonus.
Money can be earned again, but a life is gone forever once it’s lost!” Aunt May lectured her. “Think about it. You and Nina need to wire that $200,000 as soon as possible.”
With that, Aunt May hurried away.
Mia kept her hands in her pockets, staring at Aunt May’s retreating back. Once Aunt May disappeared into the vard, Mia stood there for a few seconds before heading toward the nursing station.
Hello, who is Carly’s primary doctor?”
The nurse checked the records. “That would be Dr. Lewis.”
Mia nodded, thanked her, and walked toward Dr. Lewis’s office.
Dr. Lewis was currently the youngest doctor at Northbrook General Hospital. He had very little seniority and no urgical experience. Mia reached the office door and saw his full name, then looked him up on her phone.
This doctor had graduated only three years ago and had been an assistant until last month. By all rights, he houldn’t be lead surgeon on a case like this. Yet, he was Carly’s primary doctor.
Miss Carter.”
A familiar voice called out. Mia turned around.
Cole Preston was standing at the corner, his hands in the pockets of his white lab coat.
Dr. Preston.” Mia’s brow knit. “I thought you said you wouldn’t be at the hospital for a few days.”
An emergency came up, and I was called back to handle it.”
Cole walked toward her. Seeing her standing outside Dr. Lewis’s office with a troubled expression, he asked, “Do ou need my help?”
Mia shook her head, then hesitated. “How much do you know about leukemia?”
It’s not my department, but I’m familiar with it. What do you want to know?” Cole checked his watch. “I just inished some urgent work and have a bit of time. Want to go to my office?”
Mia wasn’t close to him. She didn’t think he was the type to be kind enough to clear his schedule just to answer her questions. But Aunt May’s behavior was so strange that she couldn’t afford to be picky.
‘Okay.”
Mia followed Cole to his office. Once the door closed, the noise from the hallway vanished.
Cole poured a glass of warm water for her. “Who is the patient to you?”
“Thank you,” Mia said, taking the glass. “She’s a child from the orphanage. She was diagnosed with leukemia a
