Chapter 307
Since this was their first meeting and so many people were around, Mia Carter didn’t want to reveal her background. Although anyone could look it up, she wasn’t about to announce it in public.
“My apologies, Ms. Carter. My wife just thinks you’re so young-barely older than our son. She’s just being a bit
over-concerned.”
David Gallagher gave Mrs. Gallagher two subtle nudges.
Mrs. Gallagher was well-preserved and looked like she was in her thirties, but her eyes held a weariness and depth that made her seem fifty. Mia looked at her a few times, an odd feeling stirring in her chest.
She pushed the sensation aside and smiled politely. “I understand. It’s an honor to be invited to your banquet, Mr. Gallagher. I hope I can count on your support here in Everett.”
‘You’re too kind. Please, Ms. Carter, after you.”
David extended his hand, inviting Mia further into the event. As the host, he introduced her to the people in
attendance.
Mia used her “unwell” state as an excuse to avoid drinking. Julian Cole followed her like a shadow-every time someone offered her a glass, he drank three. The guests had no choice but to accept it, continuing their conversations while Julian handled the alcohol.
Two hours later, the banquet ended.
Mia asked the hotel staff to help carry Julian to the car. He wasn’t exactly a puddle of mush, but he wasn’t far from t. As soon as he got into the car, he slid off the seat onto the floor, curling up and mumbling nonsense through
is drunken hiccups.
Mia told the driver to contact Winston Henderson to get Julian’s address so they could drop him off.
The driver stepped out to make the call, leaving Mia and Julian alone in the car. The smell of smoke and alcohol illed the cabin. Mia rolled the window down halfway and stared out at the neon-lit streets of the city.
Hic… don’t worry, I’ll keep a close eye on her, hic!”
ulian pressed his phone to his ear, making a solemn promise. “I’m your guy…”
Mia turned her head and saw him holding the phone as if he were taking a call. But his phone hadn’t even rung.
He continued promising the person on the other end, “Don’t you worry. I’ll report her every move to you! I’ll make ure I’m following her twenty-four hours a day…”
Mia’s lips twitched. She was actually fuming, but she couldn’t help but laugh.
The reason she had kept Julian around was that she thought he was all brawn and no brains. Now it seemed Julian was even simpler than she had imagined.
Five minutes later, the driver returned and drove Julian home first. By the time Mia finally got back to her own place, it was nearly midnight.
Toby was already asleep, but Nina Torres was waiting for her on the first floor. Seeing her return, Nina

immediately went into the kitchen to bring out the soup she had been simmering all afternoon.
‘First day on the job and you’re already back this late? What are you going to do when your belly gets bigger?”
Nina was worried that Mia’s body wouldn’t be able to handle the stress as the pregnancy progressed.
Mia set her bag down, took off her jacket, and slipped into her slippers. The tension finally left her body. She had barely eaten anything all evening and was starving.
Sitting at the dining table, she sipped the hot chicken soup while asking Nina to make her a quick sandwich.
‘Looking at the company’s current state, I won’t be that busy for the next month.”
She was currently being sidelined and stripped of real power. If it hadn’t been for tonight’s banquet, she would have been home much earlier. She was supposed to be running things here, but her real job was to report everything back to Ethan Hale. Ethan would judge the situation and control things remotely.
While Nina made the sandwich, Mia messaged Leo Martinez. She sent him the names of several people from the >anquet who seemed close to the Gallaghers and well-acquainted with Winston Henderson. These people would ikely be the ones supporting the Henderson family’s attempt to seize control of the branch. She had to plan head.
