Chapter 34
Lila stuck her tongue out and immediately shut up.
Mia had no idea what Ethan had done to get on Grandma’s bad side this time.
She quickly steered the conversation away, cracking jokes to get Grandma smiling again.
“Alright, alright, stop trying to butter me up,” Grandma sighed. “I know I’m just a grumpy old woman, but I only have one rule for you girls. Don’t you dare keep secrets from me.”
She punctuated the sentence by giving the back of Mia’s hand two firm, heavy pats.
Mia felt a chill. For a second, it felt like Grandma could see right through her.
Like Grandma could read her mind like she knew Mia was hiding something from Ethan, the Hales, and the rest of the world.
‘I’ll call the housekeeper, Martha, and have her bring over some extra lunch,” Lila said, breaking the tension.
Lila grabbed her phone and stepped out onto the balcony to make the call.
But Martha had news. “Chloe Bennett made lunch herself. Mr. Ethan is driving her over right now!”
Wait, what?” Lila froze, glancing back at Mia.
The room was dead silent. Even without the speakerphone on, Mia heard every single word.
Got it,” Lila muttered. She ended the call and looked at Grandma.
Grandma, Chloe Bennett made lunch. She and Ethan are on their way here now.”
I’m meeting Nina later, so I won’t stay for lunch,” Mia cut in, finding the perfect opening to escape. “It’s getting ate. I should get going.”
Grandma looked like she wanted to keep her there, but in the end, she didn’t argue. She just waved a hand. “Go on, hen. Drive safe.”
Take care of Grandma. Don’t worry about seeing me out,” Mia said, stopping Lila from following her. She >ractically bolted out of the room.
The door clicked shut, cutting off the noise from the hallway.
Grandma let out a long, heavy sigh, her expression unreadable.
Grandma, whose baby is Mia actually carrying?” Lila asked, her voice hushed. She’d been seconds away from grabbing Mia and demanding the truth.
No marriage plans meant she wasn’t even dating anyone.
A sudden thought hit Mrs. Hale. “Knowing Mia, she wouldn’t have kept things messy with your brother after the divorce. This baby must have happened after she moved to the branch office. What if she was taken advantage of by some man?!”
Even though she was the General Manager, Mia had zero backing.

It wasn’t easy for a woman to survive in the business world alone. Men see a girl as beautiful as Mia and they start getting ideas…
The thought sent a chill down Mrs. Hale’s spine.
“What are we going to do?” Lila asked, panicking. “No wonder she asked for a transfer back to be Ethan’s secretary. She’s probably terrified of it happening again!”
Mrs. Hale couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. “Mia didn’t want to make things awkward for us, so she kept it a secret. Lila, go find out every man she’s been around lately!”
Lila nodded frantically. “Got it. I’m going to find the bastard who did this to her. My brother will make him pay
“Don’t tell your brother yet,” Mrs. Hale snapped. “If Ethan goes after some guy for another woman, the Bennetts will lose it. We handle this ourselves.”
Mia had just reached the parking lot when she saw Ethan’s car pulling in.
She quickly ducked into a corner, trying her best to stay out of sight.
