Mia’s heart was hammering against her ribs so hard it felt like it would leap out of her throat.
Ethan’s gaze, sharp as a hawk’s, seemed to pierce through her, stripping away every layer of her defenses.
‘If you’re going to hide this, hide it until the very end,” he said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. ‘Better yet, never let me find out the truth.”
He straightened his posture, yanked his tie loose, and shrugged off his suit jacket. Draping it over his arm, he urned and walked toward the side of the road.
As far as he was concerned, this baby couldn’t be his.
And yet, his instinct told him that this child was tied to him in a way he couldn’t yet explain.
He sifted through his memories, trying to find where he might have missed a detail.
There were no taxis in this high-end villa district.
Even in his current state of cold fury, he didn’t leave a pregnant woman like Mia stranded.
But Mia didn’t have the courage to ask him back into the car.
She drove away, taking a different route out of the estate. In her rearview mirror, she saw Ethan standing by the oad, his head bowed as he lit a cigarette.
The night air was cool, the streetlights flickering as a thin mist of smoke swirled around him, making him look listant and solitary.
Mia needed a rock-solid reason to explain why she had hidden the pregnancy from him.
Otherwise, she would never be able to give him a satisfactory answer.
One mistake had led to another. If she had known it would come to this, she wouldn’t have resigned. She would have stayed at the branch office in Everett.
f she had just given birth to the child under Ethan’s nose-neither hiding it nor actively reporting it-there
wouldn’t be this much drama.
When she got home, Nina came over with a late-night snack. One look at Mia’s face and Nina knew something
was wrong.
Mia curled up on the sofa, her voice weak as she recounted everything that had just happened.
Nina tried to comfort her. “Even machines glitch, Mia. How can a person stay perfectly calm all the time? You care oo much about this baby, and that’s why you panicked. If anyone’s to blame, it’s me. I’m the one who got swept up in the moment and encouraged you to leave Northbrook.”
Mia’s eyes were unfocused, her gaze wandering aimlessly as she leaned back against the cushions in silence.
We can’t really blame ourselves,” Nina added, sitting down next to her. “The opponent is Ethan Hale. If he wants to fight you for custody, he’ll win every single time. We have no chance. We had to eliminate any possibility of him finding out.”

Nina tucked a stray lock of hair behind Mia’s ear and hugged her arm. “Don’t be scared. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. First, let’s come up with a foolproof lie.”
Mia had been thinking about it the entire drive home, but she had nothing. She rested her head on Nina’s lap, rying to force her mind to settle.
Nina grew quiet, too.
After about ten minutes, Nina spoke up slowly. “I… I think I have a reason. It’s a bit soap-opera-esque, though. Do you want to hear it?”
Mia sat up and looked at her seriously. “What is it?”
Never mind. I shouldn’t have said anything.” Nina gave a sheepish laugh.
I’m desperate here, Nina. Just say it.”
Mia knew Nina’s logic usually ran on a different track than most people’s.
