Chapter 384
Chloe brushed past her, heading straight for Ethan as Mia exited.
The office door clicked shut. Ethan retracted his gaze.
Ethan, I made lunch myself.” Chloe placed a thermos on the desk, opening the containers one by one.
Ethan was expressionless. “When are you going back to Northbrook?”
Chloe’s movements paused for a second before she resumed. “When are you going back?”
I’ll return once you’ve finished your checkup.” Ethan leaned back in his chair, his posture lazy and
non-committal.
Chloe bit her lip. Her eyes, still red from her previous crying, began to well up again. “Ethan, I just wanted to see you. I’m not avoiding the checkup. I just have to hide it from my mother, and I haven’t found the right >pportunity.”
Ethan remained silent.
Let’s have lunch together,” Chloe added. “I heard Cole Preston is in Everett too. Should we invite him?”
Ethan looked at her. “Who told you Cole is in Everett?”
He had confiscated Cole’s phone; he had no contact with the outside world. Unless someone was investigating,
hey wouldn’t know Cole was here.
I… a friend of mine ran into him. Isn’t he working at a pediatric hospital now?” Chloe looked a bit guilty as she earched for a topic. “Wasn’t he an OB-GYN? Why is he a pediatrician now?”
I’m not sure,” Ethan said in a low voice.
Well, we can ask him when we eat together,” Chloe said cautiously.
After a long silence, Ethan nodded. “Fine. I’ll arrange it. You can go now.”
Okay. I’ll wait for your call.” Chloe pushed the lunch toward him. Seeing that he didn’t move, her face clouded vith disappointment, and she looked back several times as she left.
Mia had just set down her computer and was heading to lunch. While waiting for the elevator, she saw Chloe coming out of Ethan’s office.
The moment Chloe saw Mia, her look of disappointment and anxiety vanished, replaced by a mask of cold nockery. She walked over to Mia’s side.
‘I didn’t expect to see you here in Everett.”
Mia shifted to the side. “Ms. Bennett.”
‘Don’t worry, I won’t make things hard for you. You’re actually quite pathetic,” Chloe said. “You don’t even realize Ethan just used you as a pawn to make me jealous.”
It was the lunch rush, and employees were gathering at the elevators. But the atmosphere between Mia and Chloe was so eerie that no one dared to approach. Some even chose to take the stairs.
