The way Mia Carter’s brow was furrowed was etched into the depths of Ethan Hale’s dark eyes.
He stopped a short distance away from her.
“Why haven’t you left yet?” Mia asked.
“I…” Ethan started.
‘I don’t need any more help from you,” Mia said, her voice distant and filled with a clear resistance to his presence.
Ethan stood his ground, one hand tucked into his pocket, and didn’t move.
‘Mia, do you two know each other?” Clara asked, breaking the tension.
Before Mia could answer, Clara continued, “That man from earlier clearly wasn’t a good person. He tried to dodge responsibility and even tried to extort us. No one else dared to step in; it’s a good thing this gentleman was there.”
Turning to Ethan, Clara asked, “Sir, is everything handled? It was his full responsibility, right?”
Ethan nodded. “Yes.”
Oh, I’m so grateful to you.” Clara turned back to Mia. “Your friend was a huge help; you should thank him
›roperly.”
She then lowered her voice. “Why are you still wearing such a long face? It’s not appropriate.”
Even though she had lowered her voice, the hospital was too quiet at night to hide her words. They reached Ethan’s ears with perfect clarity.
Ethan’s brow quirked up slightly, his gaze shifting to Mia as if to ask: *Is this your attitude of gratitude?”
Clara was a local from Everett, warm and outspoken. She spoke her mind directly, not noticing the subtle, heavy
ension between Mia and Ethan.
Mia took a breath, her tone softening slightly. “I just thought it was getting late. I was afraid of disturbing Mr.
Hale’s rest.”
In the past, I’d still be working at this hour.”
Ethan took two steps toward her, his implication clear: it wasn’t too late at all.
Mia opened her mouth to respond, but Ethan walked right past her and headed further into the hospital.
She froze for a moment, her brow relaxing as a flash of embarrassment crossed her face.
Oh dear, the car Nina called for me is here. I have to go!” Clara exclaimed, hurrying toward the exit.
Mia nodded and watched Clara leave before making her way to Toby’s ward.
Outside the door, Ethan and Cole Preston were standing together.
The fever was quite severe. It’s a good thing he was brought in when he was,” Cole was saying. “We gave him a fever-reducing shot, and his temperature has dropped a bit, but there’s a chance of it spiking again during the night.”

Cole peered through the window at the mother and son on the bed. “Overall, the problem isn’t too large. I don’t
now why she was so panicked.”
Ethan leaned against the wall, remaining silent.

Mia walked over and joined the conversation. “This is Toby’s first time being sick, and it was such a high fever. We were all terrified.”
I understand now.” Cole turned around. “Go in and comfort her. If she keeps going like this, she’ll collapse before he baby gets better.”
Mia nodded. After a few seconds of silence, she added, “Thank you both for tonight. You should head back now.”
I’m on the night shift.” Cole pointed to the badge on his white coat.
