Chapter 418
‘I’m ashamed to admit it,” Mrs. Gallagher said, leading Mia to a seat. She cast a sharp glare at Serena. “Tell her yourself.”
Serena looked incredibly uncomfortable, her expression stiff. “Mia, I’m sorry. I was the one who had the news spread.”
She had worked with Clinton Sterling on it, but Serena didn’t want to bring him into it. If her lie to Clinton were exposed, she’d be in even deeper trouble. She decided to take the full blame.
‘Our family has always been upright. Serena was just led astray by someone else,” Mr. Gallagher added. His tone was a thousand times better than the last time he’d told Mia to stay away. “Please don’t hold a grudge over this.”
‘Exactly,”
,” Mrs. Gallagher chimed in with a smile. “You and Serena are both pregnant and about the same number of months along. You should have plenty to talk about. If you spend more time together, I’m sure you’ll become great friends.”
She spoke as if she were reconciling two elementary school students after a playground spat.
‘I wouldn’t dare presume,” Mia replied, her words making it clear she had no interest in being friends with Serena. Furthermore, she didn’t want to be close to the Gallaghers at all. “Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher, please rest assured that what’s in the past is in the past. I won’t hold onto it.”
Mrs. Gallagher glanced at her husband.
Mr. Gallagher cleared his throat. “Are you still angry about what I said the other day, Mia? I apologize for those words. My wife is soft-hearted and was nearly used by someone she trusted before. That’s why I’m a bit >verprotective when it comes to her social life. I was being narrow-minded.”
You’re overthinking it, Mr. Gallagher. It’s not an issue with Mrs. Gallagher Jr., and it’s certainly not an issue with ou. I’m just a slow starter when it comes to people. My focus is entirely on my work, and I simply don’t have the ime or energy for new friends.”
Mia’s rejection was polite but firm. As she spoke, she glanced at Patrick. He looked like a complete outsider, gnoring the conversation entirely as he stared at his phone. The fact that he hadn’t turned the volume up on whatever he was watching was the only sign of respect he was showing for the meeting.
The room fell into an awkward silence.
Mia stood up and gave a slight nod. “Thank you again, Mr. Gallagher, for your help. I’ve already settled the tab. I won’t be staying for lunch. I hope you all enjoy your meal.”
She turned to leave.
Mr. Gallagher’s face darkened as he looked at his wife. Mrs. Gallagher immediately stood up, grabbed her coat, and followed Mia out.
‘Mia, I only just found out he said such harsh things to you,” Mrs. Gallagher said, catching up to her outside the
booth.
Mia had been walking briskly, but she was forced to slow down as the woman caught up.

Mia gave a polite, distant smile. “Mrs. Gallagher, I truly haven’t taken it to heart. There’s no need to see me out. Please, go back inside.”
