Chapter 439
Mia Carter and Nina Torres exchanged a look, both sensing something off in Aunt May’s behavior.
“We know,” Mia replied, looking down to toy with her phone, acting as if she were indifferent.
Aunt May leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Have you had contact with them already?”
Mia stopped scrolling and looked up at her. “If you have something to say, just say it directly.”
‘Why are you being so mysterious?” Nina snapped, unable to keep her temper in check. “What, are you a member of the Gallagher family or something?”
Aunt May shook her head. “Of course not. I’m just telling you-stay away from the Gallaghers.”
‘Give me a reason,” Mia countered.
There is no reason. Do you really think I’d ever try to hurt you?” Aunt May put on a look of forced concern. “You wo never listen. If I tell you something and you won’t hear it, then I won’t bother anymore. If you offend the Gallagher family, I won’t be able to save you.”
Nina rolled her eyes. “Why would we offend them? Can you just speak plainly for once?”
It’s not that you’ll offend them; it’s that if the Gallaghers find out you exist, they’ll go out of their way to make life lifficult for you.” Aunt May tapped the table twice for emphasis. “You have a grudge against the Gallaghers.”
Vina: “???”
You know where we came from,” Mia blurted out.
Aunt May froze, then immediately shook her head. “I don’t!”
If you don’t know, then why say we have a grudge against them?” Mia pressed. “This is our first time ever visiting
Everett.”
Nina’s eyes widened. “What exactly do you mean by that?”
Goodness.” Aunt May went silent for a few seconds, her brow furrowing deeply. “I… actually, it’s “me*. *I* have a grudge against the Gallagher family. I just don’t want you associating with them.”
I don’t believe you,” Mia said, seeing right through her.
Believe what you want.” Aunt May didn’t look embarrassed at being caught in a lie; instead, she looked irritable as she stood up. “I just remembered I have things to do. Forget lunch; I’m leaving.”
She turned and left before Mia or Nina could even react.
What was that all about?” As soon as the word ‘parentage’ had been mentioned, Nina had become incredibly focused. “Do you think we really might be related to the Gallagher family?”
Mia looked at her friend. She saw the longing for family and the hope in Nina’s eyes.
‘I was just speaking off the cuff.” Mia handed Nina a glass of water. “Stay calm.”
‘I think your analysis was spot on,” Nina said urgently. “We just got to Everett and haven’t even met the Gallaghers

“Nina.” Mia’s tone was gentle but heavy. “If she really knows something, she’ll tell us eventually. And besides, the truth might not be as happy as you’re imagining.”
Searching for family didn’t just lead to stories of being lost or kidnapped. There was also the very real possibility of being intentionally abandoned.
“But what if it’s a good thing?” Nina argued without hesitation. “What if our parents have been looking for us too? I forgot to ask her just now-is it you who’s related to them, or me?”
She looked toward the direction Aunt May had gone, looking ready to chase her down.
Seeing her like this made Mia’s throat tighten. She didn’t know what else to say.
‘Maybe it’s you,” Nina said, turning back and grabbing Mia’s hand. “The Gallaghers have been acting so strangely toward you. Do you think they recognized you?”
She was even more excited than Mia was.
Mia’s brow, which had momentarily relaxed, knit together again. “Nina, please, stay calm.”
They had been fine when they arrived, but this sudden turn of events had completely unsettled Nina.
‘I have nothing to be calm about. Finding my family has always been my obsession. Mia, since there’s finally a ead-and one that practically delivered itself to us-you have to get to the bottom of this!”
Nina began muttering to herself, pulling out her phone to search for the Gallagher family online. However, the news results she found were far less detailed than what Leo Martinez had uncovered. There was nothing that ooked out of the ordinary.
