After Mia took Toby back and had lunch, she rested for a while before getting ready.
She chose a black dress. It did a good job of hiding her bump and made her skin look incredibly fair. She didn’t wear any makeup, yet she didn’t look tired at all. The few extra pounds she’d gained during the pregnancy actually gave her a healthy, radiant glow.
When she stepped out of the building with her bag, Jaxon was already waiting at the curb in his Rolls-Royce supercar. He was leaning against the car, scrolling through his phone.
Hearing the door open, he glanced up briefly before looking back at his screen.
A second later, his head snapped back up.
The evening sun was low in the sky, casting a golden light over Mia. Her pale skin seemed to shimmer with a faint metallic glow. She had her dark hair pulled back into a high ponytail, the ends brushing against her shoulders. She ooked as pure and fresh as a high school student.
‘Let’s go.”
Mia walked over and pulled on the door handle, but it wouldn’t budge. She looked up at Jaxon, catching the dazed ook in his dark eyes. She frowned. “What are you staring at?”
Huh!?” Jaxon snapped out of it, shoved his phone into his pocket, and hurried around the car to open the passenger door for her.
He pulled the handle, but it didn’t open. He realized the car was still locked. He chuckled awkwardly, pulled out his key fob to unlock it, and finally opened the door.
As he drove, his gaze kept drifting toward Mia, only to snap back to the road every time she noticed.
Mia forgot to message Nina to let her know she wouldn’t be home for dinner. She lowered her head to type out the WhatsApp message, failing to notice Jaxon’s unusual behavior.
By the time she finished the message, the Rolls-Royce had already cleared the apartment complex.
The sunset was vibrant over the shifting mountain peaks. A cool night breeze drifted through the window. Mia draped a bird-and-flower patterned shawl over her shoulders,
Does the Rivers family really have partners here in Everett?” she asked.
‘Huh?” Jaxon shot her a quick look before focusing back on the road. “My dad visited years ago. I’m not sure who :he partners are, exactly. He just told me that since I was here, I should show my face as a gesture of goodwill.”
Mia nodded. “That makes sense. Business etiquette is important.”
Jaxon nodded in agreement. “How about this? After the gala, I’ll treat you to a late-night snack.”
‘Sure. But I’ll be the one treating you,” Mia replied. She figured they wouldn’t be at the gala for long and wouldn’t have time to eat much there anyway.
“Fine, you treat,” Jaxon said without hesitation. “You’re helping me out; the least I can do is let you buy me dinner.”
Mia let out a soft laugh and waved her phone. “I’ve already booked a place. Don’t complain if it isn’t fancy

enough.”
Jaxon had helped her far more than she had helped him.

Seeing her smile made Jaxon’s heart skip a beat, and he found himself grinning along with her.
It wasn’t until they arrived at the venue that Mia realized this was a national business exchange summit.
Inside the ballroom, men in tailored suits moved through the crowd, gathered in small groups to discuss industry
