Chapter 462

Serena’s body tensed, her face unable to hide her nervousness.
“Mrs. Gallagher, that’s against regulations,” Cole said without hesitation. “I follow the rules.”
Mrs. Gallagher opened her bag, pulled out a check, and slid it across the table.
“Is this enough?”
It was for $1,000,000. A very generous offer.
Cole’s gaze lingered on the check for a moment before looking back at Mrs. Gallagher.
“The Young Mrs. Gallagher is already over seven months along. Is the Gallagher family looking for a boy?”
Mrs. Gallagher nodded, making no effort to hide her goal. “There are two. Surely at least one is a boy.”
“If that’s the case, why didn’t you get checked sooner? At this stage, what will you do if neither is a boy?” Cole countered.
Serena spoke up immediately, “One of them has to be a boy!”
The arrogance was gone from her face, replaced by panic and anxiety.
Mrs. Gallagher explained, “The Gallagher family is currently in the spotlight. We were afraid word would get out. Dr. Preston, you’ve just established yourself in Everett. If you’re willing, our family is willing to be your backer and ensure you have no worries in this city.”
It was a temptation and a threat. If Cole didn’t agree, the Gallaghers had ways to make sure he couldn’t stay in
Everett.
Cole sensed the hidden meaning. After a moment of silence, he said, “Could you give me some time to think about
it?”
Mrs. Gallagher nodded. She pulled a test form from her pocket and handed it over. “We’ll go over there first. If you change your mind, come straight there.”
If Cole didn’t show up, it would prove he had chosen to be the Gallagher family’s enemy.
An average person would have jumped at the chance to cling to the Gallaghers’ coattails without hesitation.
Cole stood up to see Mrs. Gallagher and Serena out. Once the door was shut, he immediately called Ethan.
He relayed everything Mrs. Gallagher had said.
“Agree to it,” Ethan said instantly.
“My professional ethics won’t allow it, Cole reminded him.
Ethan replied, “I allow it.”
Cole: “…”
The Gallaghers have been investigating Mia. They’re definitely up to something. I need to figure out their motive. Ethan was brief. “It’s perfect for you to go deep behind enemy lines.”

So, it was for Mia again.
Cole reminded him, “You’ve already let Mia go. She’s already at Riverside.”
“I don’t need you to remind me,” Ethan snapped, hanging up.

Cole stared at the darkened screen, a helpless smirk tugging at his lips. “Ethan, Ethan… you really are a piece of work. Still acting tough.”
He tucked the check away and headed to the ultrasound room.
Mrs. Gallagher looked satisfied when she saw him arrive. Cole made an excuse and took over the task of performing the ultrasound on Serena.
“The fetuses are developing well. The Young Mrs. Gallagher should consider eating a bit less to avoid the babies getting too large, which would make delivery difficult.”
Neither Mrs. Gallagher nor Serena cared about his advice.
They asked in unison, “Is there a boy?”
Cole glanced at them. Neither of them showed any sign of impropriety in asking such a question; they simply looked like people who had paid for a service and wanted results.
‘I can only see one clearly.” Cole paused before saying, “It’s a girl. The other one is blocked, I can’t see it.”
Half their hope vanished. Serena’s expression soured.
Mrs. Gallagher shot her a look, her dissatisfaction practically overflowing.
‘Dr. Preston, there’s one more thing I want to ask you.” She turned her head to look at Cole. “You’re also Mia Carter’s OB-GYN, aren’t you?”
Cole’s face remained calm, but he was stunned internally.
Ethan’s intuition was terrifyingly accurate. The Gallagher family really was targeting Mia.
