Toby’s crying echoed through the car window. Even Clara’s best efforts weren’t working.
Nina had no choice but to get back in. Seizing the moment Nina was occupied, Mia hailed a taxi and headed straight for the Gallagher house.
Mrs. Gallagher seemed to have expected her. When Mia rang the doorbell at the Gallagher manor, the servant asked immediately, “Are you Miss Carter?”
“Yes,” Mia nodded. “Is Mrs. Gallagher in?”
“The Madam is in the tea room. I’ll take you to her.”
The servant opened the door and handed her a pair of slippers.
Mia changed her shoes, grabbed her bag, and walked down the long corridor of the living room to the tea room at the far end.
Mrs. Gallagher was sitting primly at the tea table. A pot of tea was bubbling on the stove, the fragrance filling the
air.
“Mia, why are you here?”
Seeing Mia, Mrs. Gallagher stood up and reached out to take her hand.
Mia stepped back, her gaze cold and distant.
“Mrs. Gallagher, you should know exactly why I’m here.”
Mrs. Gallagher froze for a moment before pulling her hand back.
“I do know. But I didn’t expect you to arrive so quickly. Please, sit down.”
Mia stood by the table, unmoving. “Just say what you have to say.”
Seeing her lack of cooperation, a flash of disappointment crossed Mrs. Gallagher’s face.
She sat back down, poured a cup of tea, and pushed it toward Mia.
“Actually, I once had a daughter.”
She watched Mia closely as she spoke.
But Mia’s expression didn’t change. She showed no shock at this “bombshell” news.
“Whatever you’re saying, it has nothing to do with me.”
“It does.”
Mrs. Gallagher quickly followed up. “She… I don’t know where she is now. Looking at you reminds me of her, so I really wanted to be good to you.”
Mia’s brow furrowed so deeply it was practically a knot.
If Mrs. Gallagher had claimed to suspect Mia was her long-lost daughter, it would have made sense.

But she wasn’t. She just said Mia “reminded” her of the girl.

“I don’t know how you were separated from your daughter, but if you really miss her, you should go look for her. I’m sure the Gallagher family has the resources to find anyone. And if you can’t find her and want to make up for the loss, go to an orphanage and adopt a child. Heal your regret from the beginning. Don’t try to use a stranger to fill that void. I’m an adult; I can’t accept unearned kindness like this.”
Mrs. Gallagher looked at her with a complex gaze. “Mia, actually you-”
“Mia is here?”
Before Mrs. Gallagher could finish, Mr. Gallagher’s voice came from outside.
He entered the tea room, a smile touching his face when he saw Mia.
“What fruit do you like? I’ll have the servants prepare some.”
Mrs. Gallagher stood up. “Look at me, I was so busy talking I forgot the snacks… No, I’ll go prepare them myself.”
She squeezed past Mr. Gallagher and headed for the dining room.
Mia could vaguely see her raising a hand, looking as if she were wiping away tears.
‘Don’t bother. I’ve made myself clear. I’ll be going now.”
Mia nodded to Mr. Gallagher and prepared to leave.
‘Miss Carter, could you give me a few minutes of your time?”
Mr. Gallagher lowered his voice, his tone almost pleading.
He was a completely different person from the man who had warned her to stay away from his wife the other day.
‘Go ahead, Mia said, keeping her tone polite.
Mr. Gallagher glanced toward the dining room and whispered.
We once had a daughter, but she was lost. Since then, my wife hasn’t been well. This isn’t the first time she’s seen
girl around our daughter’s age and tried to shower them with affection.”
