If things were as Mr. Gallagher explained, it almost made sense. However, Mia still couldn’t Gallagher’s bizarre behavior.
“Have Leo investigate the Gallagher family.”

Ethan glanced out the window as sunlight washed over his face, highlighting the sharp, clean lines of his jaw.
Mia paused. She could tell by his tone that he was still irritated.
“What? Can’t your former boss show a little concern for your affairs? Is your current boss really that neglectful?”
Ethan’s voice was dripping with sarcasm.
It was grating to Mia’s ears. “Of course not. I just don’t want to trouble him.”
“So considerate. You certainly caused me plenty of trouble back then.”
Ethan’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. “I taught you everything-turning you from a clueless rookie into a business elite-only for you to turn around and run off with someone else the second you could. You’re heartless,
Mia.”
Mia shot him a side-glance, seeing only the stiff, short hairs on the back of his head.
“It was a mutual separation. No party lasts forever. Did you really expect me to work for you my whole life?”
At a red light, Ethan hit the brakes and turned his entire body to face her.
“Then how long do you plan on working for Jaxon?”
Mia remained silent.
“If it’s just a job, it probably won’t last a lifetime either. So, when are you making it official?”
Ethan’s words sounded like an interrogation, laced with a bitter jealousy.
“None of your business,” Mia replied.
“How is it not my business?” Ethan turned back to face the road.
The light turned green. He released the brake and slammed the gas. “Jaxon is a big deal in Northbrook. I’d have to send a massive gift for the occasion.”
“Don’t bother.”
His tone didn’t sound like he was planning to send a gift. It sounded like he was planning to crash a wedding.
“Just because you don’t want it doesn’t mean Jaxon won’t. He’s thick-skinned enough.”
Ethan’s sarcasm intensified. “Mia, I didn’t realize you liked guys like that.”
Mia didn’t realize Ethan could be this petty, either.
“Please pull over, Mr. Hale. I’ll take a cab the rest of the way.”
“Stopping is prohibited on this road.”

Mia looked back at a road sign they had just passed but couldn’t make it out. “Then drop me off as soon as you find a legal spot.”
“Fine.” Ethan sounded like he couldn’t wait to be rid of her.
Mia stopped looking at him, turning her gaze to the scenery flying past the window. She wondered if Mrs. Gallagher would back down regarding the postpartum center. If not, she’d have to find a private nurse and recover at home.
Lost in thought, she barely noticed the car slowing down.
She snapped back to reality and realized they were already at her front door.
Ethan sat in the car, his hawk-like gaze fixed on something outside. Following his look, Mia saw Jaxon standing directly in front of the car.
Jaxon was chewing on a toothpick, craning his neck to peer through the dark-tinted windows.
A second later, he spat out the toothpick and walked over, rapping his knuckles against the glass.
Ethan rolled the window down but refused to look at him.
Jaxon leaned his hands on the window frame, peering inside to glance at Mia before looking Ethan up and down.
“Mr. Hale, what exactly are you doing with my person?”
Jaxon emphasized the words “my person.”
Ethan’s narrow eyes suddenly sharpened. His jawline tensed.
“Since she’s your person, protect her. If you don’t have the guts to do it, I will.”
Jaxon’s expression shifted slightly. It wasn’t because of the threat.
“Who bullied you?” Jaxon asked, looking at Mia.
