Mia looked at it for a few seconds before saying calmly, “Ethan and Chloe’s.”
Jaxon clicked his tongue. “Spot on. My dad sent over your employment contract and tucked this in with it. Ethan specifically invited me.”
He hadn’t invited the Rivers family; he had named Jaxon specifically.
Mia did the math. The wedding was less than a month away.
The outdoor air was wide and fresh, yet she felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of suffocation.
“So when do you plan on heading back to Northbrook?” She looked away from the invitation.
Jaxon said, “I don’t plan on going. His wedding is right around your due date. I’m afraid I’ll miss the birth.”
Mia couldn’t help but look at him. “You aren’t the father. What does it matter if you miss it?”
“I’m the Godfather. I have to be there.”
Jaxon said without hesitation, “I don’t feel right leaving a ‘widowed’ mother and another single mother like Nina
alone in Everett.”
Two women raising kids on their own-it did sound a bit pitiful.
Mia appreciated the sentiment and the warmth of his offer.
‘Go back if you need to, Jaxon. I was angry with you before, but only because you lied to me about Carly. I’m incredibly grateful that you’ve helped me hide my pregnancy this long. I don’t blame you for anything. You don’t need to stay and watch over me.”
Jaxon was from Northbrook, after all. He couldn’t stay in Everett forever.
And Northbrook was a place Mia would never return to.
‘I’ll go,” Jaxon said quickly, afraid she was about to launch into a long lecture.
Technically, he had no right or status to stay by Mia’s side.
‘I’ll head back a week before the wedding!”
Anyway, he could always come back after he went.
Mia nodded and glanced at the invitation in his hand again.
On a sudden whim, she asked, “Can I see it?”
‘Sure.” Jaxon’s tone was a bit awkward as he handed it over.
Mia took it and opened it. She recognized the handwriting inside.
It wasn’t written by Ethan. It was Miranda.
She looked at it for a few seconds, then closed it and handed it back. “It’s late. Get some rest.”
With that, she turned and left.

Jaxon watched her back, his brow furrowing deeply. His fingertips turned white from gripping the invitation.
The wedding was approaching. Ethan would have to head back soon, wouldn’t he?
As the date drew closer, the media coverage of the wedding became more intense.
Almost every time Mia opened her eyes, she saw news headlines about it on every major website.
‘Ethan Hale and Chloe Bennett to Wed.*
It was the wedding of the year. Miranda was personally handling the arrangements, ensuring everything was
top-tier.
Miranda was seen out and about with Chloe every day, clearly satisfied with her future daughter-in-law.
However, Ethan had yet to make an appearance.
The media didn’t mention it, but people following the wedding began commenting on every article, wondering if here was some hidden drama behind the marriage.
Rumors began to swirl through the Northbrook elite circles as well.
All it would take was for Ethan to show his face, and the gossip would vanish.
Mia didn’t get news of Ethan returning to Northbrook. Instead, she got a phone call from Miranda.
It was six in the evening. She was just about to head over to Nina’s for dinner.
She stepped out of her house and answered the call while standing by the road.
Tell Ethan to come back,” Miranda ordered.
Mia was confused. “Excuse me?”
Miranda repeated herself, her patience wearing thin. “I said, tell Ethan to come back!”
I should tell him to go back?”
Miranda spoke with such entitlement, it was as if Ethan were Mia’s son.
Is there something wrong with what I said? He and Chloe are about to get married, yet you’re hogging him and teeping him from coming back to Northbrook. Chloe has become a laughingstock, and the Hale family is being Iragged through the mud. Mia, if this marriage is ruined because of you, I’m never going to let it go! If I don’t see Ethan back within three days, I’ll kill myself right in front of you!”
