A soft, warm sensation pressed against Cole Preston’s cheek.

It felt as if his skin had been scorched; a wave of heat spread from his cheek to the tips of his ears. His dark pupils fixed on Nina Torres’s bright, clear eyes.

“I’m serious,” he managed to choke out, his Adam’s apple bobbing.

Nina was ecstatic. She let go of Cole and did a little spin on the spot.

“Yes! I finally made it through! I’ll be able to see Mia tomorrow!”

She flopped onto the sofa, mentally calculating her chances of “rescuing” Mia the next day. After a while, she reached a conclusion: the chances were zero.

For the first meeting, she’d just scout the area and test the waters. She’d definitely need a second visit.

‘Dr. Preston, you haven’t fully recovered yet. After I see Mia tomorrow, I’ll go home to check on my son and then come back to look after you for another two days.”

Cole saw right through her intentions. “Miss Torres, you’re so concerned about me. Thank you truly.”

Nina waved him off. “Hey, we’re fellow Northerners-we have to look out for each other. It’s a deal, then.”

Nina was too excited to sleep all night.

At eight o’clock the next morning, Mia Carter had just finished nursing. She was holding the soundly sleeping ittle guy in her arms when the ward door pushed open.

Cole opened the door and stepped aside as Nina’s head poked through.

The moment Nina saw Mia, she shoved Cole out of the way and rushed inside.

Vina knew Mia had undergone surgery at this hospital. She had assumed Mia had already been discharged and aken to one of Ethan’s villas to be kept under guard. She had spent the last few days trying every trick to squeeze nformation out of Cole, but she hadn’t gotten a single word.

Nina looked down at the tiny bundle of flesh in Mia’s arms and frowned in disapproval.

You just gave birth recently; you shouldn’t be carrying him. Give him to me.”

She tossed her bag onto the sofa, rubbed her hands together to warm them, and carefully took the baby.

The barrage of questions and concern made Mia’s heart ache with emotion. She handed the baby over and sniffled before answering.

‘I’m fine. The doula is out right now, so I only held him for a moment. He’s been born for so many days, and I’ve barely held him at all.”

Nina used one hand to gently press Mia back into a lying position.

‘Dr. Preston, I need to talk to her in private. Go tend to your work.”
