“Push the evening meeting back thirty minutes,” he told Mia. “Wait for me to get back before you start.”
It wasn’t a request; it was an order.
Mia stood up, her movements stiff. She gave a robotic nod. “Understood, Mr. Hale.”
Ethan, go on ahead,” Chloe said. “I need a quick word with Ms. Carter.”
Chloe handed her bag to Ethan, her voice sweet and clingy. “Meet me at the front entrance in a bit, okay?”
Ethan checked his watch. “If you have something to say, say it now.”
‘Oh, come on! It’s embarrassing to say in front of you. Just go. It’s not like I’m going to eat her alive, right?”
Chloe practically shoved Ethan toward the elevator.
Ethan’s brow furrowed, though his face softened with a look of resignation. He caught Mia’s eye right before the
elevator doors closed.
It was a sharp, warning look. Don’t open your mouth, it said.
But the second the elevator left the floor, Chloe’s sweet act vanished.
She strutted back to Mia’s desk, her chin tilted high. “Don’t get it twisted,” she snapped. “Ethan only refused to let you go because he’s trying to spite me. We had a fight, and he’s using you to get under my skin.”
A dull ache throbbed in Mia’s chest. It all clicked. That was exactly how Ethan operated.
Ethan wasn’t anyone’s puppet. The harder Chloe pushed to get rid of Mia with her petty schemes, the more he refused to give her what she wanted.
Mia, you’re smart. Get out while the getting’s good. If we really stop playing nice… Ethan would never let me be he one who ends up crying.”
Chloe stayed in the office all afternoon. She kept thinking back to what Mia said about how moving to Riverside would ruin her career.
Not that Chloe gave a damn. She didn’t care about Mia’s future; she just wanted her gone. She laid down the law ɔne last time, making it clear that Mia had better pack her bags and follow Jaxon when the time came.
Once she finished her little power trip, she finally left.
Mia sat back down at her desk, numbing her mind by prepping for the late-night meeting.
About an hour later, Ethan hurried back, bringing the biting chill of the Northbrook night with him.
The cold air hit Mia as he walked past. She grabbed her blazer, pulled it on, and stood up. “Mr. Hale, the meeting
starts in five minutes.”
“Got it.” Ethan paused, turning his head to look at her. “What did Chloe say to you?”
“Nothing much,” Mia replied, her voice flat. She met his gaze with eyes that were completely unfazed, like a still pond.

The squeaky wheel always got the grease.
If Chloe shed a few tears and played the victim, Ethan would cave instantly.
But if Mia cried? Ethan wouldn’t even blink. He wouldn’t feel a thing.
No one was ever going to feel sorry for Mia Carter.
She had learned to swallow her pain a long time ago. It was a habit now.

Seeing that she didn’t look upset or harassed, Ethan didn’t press further and walked straight into his office.
Later, at the Bennett estate.
Chloe had tracked down Jaxon Rivers’ number through a friend. She dialed it without hesitation.
“Jaxon,” she snapped the moment he picked up. “I heard you’re trying to poach Mia Carter?”
It took Jaxon Rivers a few seconds to recognize the voice. “Oh, look who it is. Little Miss Chloe Bennett. What’s the matter? You and Ethan haven’t called it quits yet?”
Watching Ethan in the news every day was better than any drug. His mood improved with every headline.
Today was the best yet. After hearing some juicy gossip from a mole inside Bayview, he was on top of the world.
“You’re full of it!” Chloe snapped, her face flushing with rage. “Ethan and I are never breaking up!”
axon chuckled over the line. “Keep telling yourself that. You’re just too scared to admit that Mia is already making you lose your grip on him, aren’t you?”
Chloe wasn’t about to give him the satisfaction. She grit her teeth. “I just don’t want some random woman clinging to Ethan. That’s all there is to it.”
“Sure, whatever helps you sleep at night.” Jaxon didn’t bother calling out her pathetic excuse. “But I can’t help you get rid of her. I offered Mia double her salary to jump ship and work for me, and she still turned me down.”
