Work was relentless. Mia spent the entire weekend buried in overtime.
When she finally caught a break with two days of leave, she headed straight to the hospital for a check-up.
To avoid being recognized, she pulled on a mask and a baseball cap, making sure she was completely covered.
Everyone else in the OB-GYN waiting room had someone with them. Amidst the sea of couples, Mia stood out like a sore thumb.
She found a seat in a quiet corner. From under the brim of her hat, her bright eyes landed on a young couple
nearby.
She’d overheard them talking earlier. They’d only been married for three months, and they were already expecting.
A young couple nearby looked radiant, their faces glowing with the excitement of becoming parents.
Mia rested her hand on her belly. A small smile touched her lips.
She wanted this baby, too.
Mia?”
axon Rivers stood a few feet away, holding some lab results. He tilted his head, looking her over.
Mia looked up. Her smile died.
It really is you!” Jaxon looked stunned. He nearly slammed into a pregnant woman as he rushed over to her. “What ire you doing here?”
it was too late for Mia to play dumb or pretend he had the wrong person.
She forced herself to stand up, her heart racing. “I’m… just here for a checkup.”
axon looked around at the sea of baby bumps surrounding them. “A prenatal check?”
Ultrasounds are part of a standard physical for women,” she countered quickly.
There were a few other women in line for regular gyno exams, so she wasn’t completely out of place.
axon didn’t buy it. He scanned her from head to toe, his eyes narrowing. “You look perfectly fine. Why the sudden checkup?”
‘My stomach was bothering me, so I took the day off. Since I was already here, I figured I’d just get a full workup.”
Mia didn’t skip a beat as she shifted the focus. “Still haven’t been discharged yet, Mr. Rivers?”
Jaxon’s face soured instantly. He dropped into the seat right next to her.
“I’ve got Ethan to thank for that. Looks like I’m stuck here for a while.”
Right now, Jaxon could still use his “health issues” as an excuse for being sidelined.
But once he checked out of the hospital, everyone would know Ethan had played him like a fiddle.
“In that case, I won’t take up any more of your time, Mr. Rivers. You should head back and get some rest.”

Jaxon kicked back and crossed his legs, looking perfectly at ease. “I’ve been bored out of my mind lately. I’ll stick around and keep you company.”
Mia: “…”
“This isn’t a good idea,” she reminded him. “I’m a secretary at Bayview, and you’re the CEO of Riverside.”
Jaxon gritted his teeth, forcing a smile. “I’m not the CEO of Riverside right now!”
Riverside will be yours again sooner or later,” Mia said.
She was just being honest, but the words stung.
It was a direct hit to Jaxon’s pride, reminding him exactly how Ethan had screwed him over.
“What are you so worried about? You’re so bundled up that nobody would even know it’s you.”
Didn’t you just recognize me?
Mia didn’t think she and Jaxon were close enough for him to pick her out of a crowd, especially with her face
half-hidden like this.
Seeing him settled in and clearly determined not to leave, her head started to throb.
‘Number 32, Mia Carter!”
Mia stood up and reached for her bag. “Mr. Rivers, you should really head back. My check-up is going to take a long time…”
Before she could finish, Jaxon snatched the bag right out of her hands.
I’ll hold your bag. Just get in there.”
Mia tried to snatch her bag back, but Jaxon hugged it to his chest, his eyes glued to his phone. He didn’t give her an nch of space to grab it.
Number thirty-two, Mia Carter!”
The intercom blared again.
Mia had no choice but to take her paperwork and head into the exam room.
Luckily, Jaxon didn’t seem to suspect a thing. He probably thought she was just here for a routine physical.
Miss Carter, right? You’re ten weeks along,” the doctor said.
The doctor checked the monitor while giving her the rundown. “The fetus is developing well, but you’re way too
hin. You need to eat more and get those nutrients in.”
Mia tilted her head, staring at the blurry gray shape on the ultrasound screen.
‘That’s the baby right there. See? Little arms, little legs…”
The doctor tilted the screen toward her. “This is the heartbeat. Let’s take a listen.”
