Chapter 89
Mia realized she needed to have a serious talk with Jaxon.
Back in her room, she picked at her lunch and pulled out her phone to send him a message.
[Mr. Rivers, I’m just an ordinary person. Please stop throwing me into the line of fire.]
Just seconds later, there was a sharp knock on her door.
“Mia, it’s me!”
It was Jaxon.
Mia was about to get up, but then she changed her mind and sat right back down. She pulled out her phone and sent him a text.
[I don’t want to ruin your lunch. We can talk over iMessage.]
The hallway went silent. Jaxon’s reply popped up a second later.
[Even if I don’t push, Chloe is never going to let you off the hook. Relax. I won’t let anyone touch you.]
Mia: [Do that again, and don’t expect me to be polite.]
This wasn’t a request. It was a warning.
But her firm tone didn’t exactly make Jaxon back down. →
[I’ll be more careful next time. I won’t put you in such a spot.]
He was basically saying he’d still do it he’d just be more subtle about it.
But Mia didn’t want “subtle.” She wanted him to stop entirely.
She locked her phone and tossed it aside, a flicker of pure annoyance crossing her face.
After thinking it over, she sent one last message.
Fine. Suit yourself.]
She heard footsteps outside the door. Jaxon was gone.
At 3:00 PM, Mia heard voices in the hall again.
‘After we’re done at the canyon, let’s find a place nearby for dinner,” Chloe’s voice chirped.
She was buzzing around Ethan, full of energy. “The amusement park has fireworks tonight! I really want to see them!”
Ethan was dressed down in casual clothes, his gaze fixed on Chloe.
“Watch where you’re going,” he said. “Don’t run into anyone.”
Chloe was walking backward, tilting her head to look up at him. “Not until you tell me if my plan works for you!”
“Sure,” Ethan said. He reached out, bracing his arm against a sharp corner of the wall just before Chloe could bump into it.

Mia watched them through the peephole until they disappeared.

From the sound of it, they wouldn’t be back until tonight. That meant she had the afternoon off.
She grabbed her bag and headed out to a nearby mall.
She had tried on another button-down earlier, but it was too tight. The buttons felt like they were going to pop at any second.
She couldn’t meet clients in casual clothes. She needed something new.
Half an hour later, she found a shirt that actually fit. She handed it to the clerk and pulled out her phone to pay.
“Miss Carter, Mr. Rivers already gave us instructions,” the clerk said with a polite smile. “Anything you pick out is on the house.”
The clerk bagged the shirt and tried to hand it to Mia.
This mall was another Riverside property.
Mia hadn’t realized Jaxon’s reach extended this far. He’d even called ahead to a mall hundreds of miles away.
Then I don’t want it,” she said.
She dropped the shirt on the counter and walked out.
By the time the clerk realized what was happening, Mia was already gone.
She caught an Uber to a different mall, making sure it wasn’t owned by Riverside this time.
But the moment she arrived at the entrance, she saw Jaxon waiting for her.
