Chapter 91
Mia Carter flinched so hard she nearly dropped the phone.
She looked down at the screen. It wasn’t Nina Torres. It was Ethan Hale.
The timer on the call ticked up, second by second. The air around her suddenly felt thin, like someone had sucked the oxygen right out of the room.
“Mr. Hale.”
‘Get back here.”

Just three words, but they hit her like a physical blow. The authority in his voice was suffocating.
The call was over. Mia’s face went pale.
Can you wrap these for me, please?”
She handed the clothes to the clerk and rushed to the register.
What’s wrong? Who was that?” Jaxon asked, his voice laced with a hint of excitement.
Mia swiped her card. “Mr. Hale. He’s back at the hotel.”
No way,” Jaxon snapped without missing a beat.
Mia didn’t bother arguing.
t didn’t matter if Ethan was actually there. The point was, he knew she’d gone out shopping without saying a word. She was busted.
Five minutes later, Mia was out the door with two shopping bags, hailing an Uber back to the hotel.
axon tried to talk her into it, but Mia wasn’t budging. She refused to get in his car.
t was 6 PM by the time she got back to the hotel. She dropped her bags in her room and headed across the hall to nock on Ethan’s door.
She knocked for a while, but there was no answer. Finally, she pulled out her phone and called him.
Mr. Hale, I’m back.”
t was noisy on his end, the unmistakable sound of a crowded public place. Then, she heard it Chloe’s igh-pitched giggle in the background.
Ethan went quiet for a few seconds. “Got it,” he said. “I’m on my way back now.”
Mia stared at her phone. Wait, what?
So he wasn’t even at the hotel?
She’d assumed he called her because of some urgent work emergency. If he was out having fun, why the hell was he rushing back the second she showed up?

About twenty minutes later, she heard footsteps in the hallway, she stood up and walked to the door.
Ethan was just reaching for his door handle. He glanced back at her over his shoulder. “Grab your laptop and come
over.”
‘Okay,” Mia said. As she turned to get her things, her eyes locked with Chloe’s.
Chloe shot her a venomous glare before following Ethan into the suite.
What kind of work is so important that we had to come back?” Chloe’s voice rose in a whine. “You had your aptop with you anyway! She’s clearly doing this on purpose to ruin our night.”
The door slammed shut, cutting her off instantly.
Mia didn’t catch every word, but the tone was clear. Chloe was throwing a tantrum because her night out had been
cut short.
By the time Mia grabbed her laptop and headed over, Chloe had already disappeared into the bedroom to sulk
Ethan sat behind the desk, the glow from his monitor casting sharp shadows over his chiseled face.
Mr. Hale,” Mia said, taking a seat across from him. “Is there something you need me to handle?”
Where were you this afternoon?”
Ethan kept his eyes fixed on the screen, his voice ice-cold.
The tension rolling off him was thick so thick Mia couldn’t ignore it even if she tried.
Mia bit her lip. “I went to buy a decent shirt. I ran into Jaxon Rivers by accident.”
Jaxon?” Ethan finally looked up, his eyes narrowing. “You two seem pretty close, Ms. Carter.”
He’d noticed she didn’t even call him Mr. Rivers.
You can see what he’s doing. He was bothering me on purpose.”
Mia figured Ethan had to see through it. He shouldn’t be this angry.
Getting worked up just meant he was falling right into Jaxon’s trap.
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Is it that hard to get rid of him?”
“Yes,” Mia snapped. She could hear the edge in his voice he was intentionally making things difficult for her.
He was acting like she actually enjoyed being cornered by Jaxon.
Her own temper started to flare. “Jaxon is the CEO of Riverside. He has all the power. I’m just a secretary how am I supposed to fight back? No one is lifting a finger to help me, I ah!”
Ethan suddenly stood up. He grabbed her, yanked her out of her chair, and slammed her down onto the desk.
