The walk from my desk to his office was not long but it felt like it. “Can’t believe he said my name casually like that in front of everyone.”
The hallway felt narrower than usual. I kept my eyes forward and my pace even and I did not bother to look at Amanda even though I could feel her watching me the entire way.
He was already back inside when I reached the door, I pushed it open and stepped in. He was standing near the window with his arms crossed loosely, not like he was angry, more like he was thinking, and he looked at me the moment I walked in
“You will just make yourself sick fighting everything I do for you.” that was the first thing he said. the moment his eyes landed on me.
I did not rush to respond, storming out earlier was already a bad move, and regardless of how I felt about what he had done, this person was still my boss. The one who signed off on my contract.
I stopped in the middle of the office. Far enough to be reasonable but close enough to have the conversation without raising my voice.
“I didn’t ask you to do anything for me,” I said.
He looked at me for a moment. Then he uncrossed his arms, pushed off from where he had been leaning, and walked toward me slowly like someone who had all the time in the world and he stopped when there was very little space left between us.
“Exactly,” he said. “That is why I did it.”
I opened my mouth and closed it again. He was standing too close and looking at me with that specific kind of attention that I recognized and had been trying very hard not to think about since the night of the red room.
I closed my eyes for a second, when I opened them he was still there. Still watching.
“Go back to work,” he said quietly. His voice had dropped slightly. “Before I say or do something I would not be able to defend.”
I held his gaze for a moment longer, then I turned around and walked out. I walked down the corridor slowly, Amanda eyes followed me until I sat back down at my desk and I put both hands flat on the surface for a second before pulling up the briefing document again.
Before I say or do something I would not be able to defend. I turned the sentence over in my mind once and then pushed it firmly to the side because I had briefing notes to finish and three back to back calls starting in less than an hour and the number from the sticky note to track down from the billing office and a payment plan to build from scratch. The last thing I want now is a debt attached to my name..
I pulled up the billing office’s internal contact and was about to type the extension when I caught Amanda looking at me from across the space. She raised her eyebrows in a slow, deliberate arc and then turned back to her screen with a small smile that she was not trying very hard to hide.
I looked back at my monitor but before I could continue, I heard the scrape of a chair before I saw her. Amanda had picked up her seat from her own desk and was dragging it across the floor toward mine. She set it down beside me and sat in it like she had been invited.
“So, she said, keeping her voice low. “What happened?”
I kept my eyes on my screen. “Nothing. Just work.”

“Hmmm just work,” she repeated.
“Yes.”
“Between you and the CEO.”
“It was a work matter, Amanda.”

She tilted her head slightly. “Are you sure? Because he sounded like it was more of a…” She paused, searching for the word.
“Amanda.” I turned to look at her directly and I kept my voice down. “I have a lot of work to do today so I really don’t think I
have the time for this.”
She held up both hands in a small surrender and stood, picking up her chair. She dragged it back without another word but caught the look on her face as she turned away and it was the smile of someone who didn’t believe me one bit.
I picked my phone to look up the billing office number and noticed three unread messages from Fred. I had promised him I would come by two days ago but the thing with my sister’s bills had happened and I had spent the last forty eight hours thinking about my life..
Suddenly, my phone rang, an unknown number. I stared at it for one ring and then picked up.
“You were not replying my messages.” Fred’s voice came in sharply.”Fuck it.”
“Fred,” I said. I kept my voice low and turned slightly away from the open office.
“I’m sorry, tight schedule,” I said. “It has been a difficult few days.”
“None of my concern,” he said, and I could hear something in the background, voices, a door closing. “The iceman is requesting for you on Friday. Be early.”
