The office was very quiet and I wasn’t even surprised, it was still seven in the morning, enough time to meditate before people started arriving. I had come in early on purpose, not because anything urgent was waiting, just because I noticed something about some of the staff recently and I needed to confirm it myself.

Felix was not in yet, I noticed this when I inside my office as my table was still empty, I turned back around, and started walking toward the kitchen at the end of the corridor. I needed coffee.

Felix not being here was a big problem, I didn’t know my way around these coffee machines, the last time I tried it, it was a disaster but today, I will try again. Hopefully I don’t create another mess, I got to the kitchen door and stopped.

I could hear a voice inside, I could recognize it before I had fully processed it, it was Bianca. She was on the phone, and she was not using that professional tone. This was the more relaxed, it was obvious she was talking to someone she’s comfortable with.

I did not push the door open. I am not sure why, exactly. It was my company and I had every right to walk in. But something made me pause, and then the words caught up to me and I stayed where I was.

“He was just standing at my door like he had some kind of right to be there,” she was saying, and then she laughed, but it was not a real laugh. It was the kind you use instead of saying something worse. “Girl, he tried to use it as leverage, he actually stood there and acted like he had something on me.”

She paused to listen to the other person on the phone. “No, I didn’t let him, I told him the truth. I said if he opens his mouth I will dismantle the only thing he has left and I meant every word.” Another short sound that was almost a laugh. “The look on his face.”

I stayed where I was, with this, I already know someone is threatening her, I needed more information.

“He sent a message after, we are not done.” I heard her exhale. “Mhen fuck him! I did not reply. I am not going to reply. What is there even to say to that?”

I had enough of the picture now, someone had shown up at her apartment the night Felix dropped her. And she had made it clear to the person that she didn’t want to have anything to do with them again but still the person isn’t agreeing to her terms, understood.

I stepped back, gave it a second, and then pushed the door open like someone who was rushing in so she wouldn’t suspect anything. She turned around immediately, her expression moved very quickly, her professional face came back and settled

“Good morning, sir,” she said, at exactly the right volume.

Then she picked up her cup from the counter, gave me one polite look, and walked out. The door swung closed behind her.

I stood in front of the coffee machine and I looked at it confused. It had several buttons and a small screen and required a level of attention I was not prepared to give it.

I pressed something, it made a noise, I pressed something else and it made a different noise. I looked at the screen, which was asking me something I did not have the patience to answer, and then I quietly picked up a bottle of water from the counter and walked back to my office.

As I walked; I couldn’t help but wonder who could be trying to threaten her. “Where the fuck is felix?” I said pushing the door open. I sat down, opened the first document of the morning, “stop thinking about what you just heard.” I told my

self.

That lasted about forty minutes until one of the directors broke it. He had no visible reason to be on that side of the floor. but there he was, leaning against the edge of her desk with the posture of someone performing casualness.

The conversation went on longer than any work-related question required. She was smiling, really smiling, I could tell he said something that was funny. I shook my head and moved my eyes back to my screen.

By mid-morning, a second director had made his way over. I noticed because I notice movement on the floor, that is just what I do. He stayed for a while then he left, then a third one came.

Three directors? One morning? Same desk? I was not having it again at this point but I just had to maintain my cool. I looked at the ceiling for a moment, and then I looked back at my monitor.

At twelve-something, the third director came back, said something to her, and they walked to the lifts together. Left the building, from the direction they were heading.

I sat back in my chair, then I stood up, walked to Felix’s desk, “pull up Bianca’s work load.” I said and he looked up, I could tell he was confused.

“Sir, she already has a lot on her…”

“Do it now!” I cut him off.

“Okay sir.” he replied,
