The hand closed around my arm and I did everything wrong. I dropped my bag, spun around, and made a sound that was embarrassingly close to a squeak before I could stop myself.
My back hit the wall and I pressed against it like the wall was going to do something useful and I stared into the dark of the foyer trying to make out a face.
I could not make out a face, there was no face, just a figure and a hand and the sound of my own breathing going completely unhinged.
I tried to move away from the hand but it shifted and found my waist instead and now it was firm there, not rough but tight.
“Let me go,” I said.
“Arggh.” A deep breath. “You smell so fucking good, Scarlett.”
The fear left my body so fast I almost went dizzy from the change. Every muscle I had clenched in panic just released at once and I stood there for a second with my heart still going too fast but my brain already catching up to what was happening.
Scarlett? Only one person could know me by that name.
I was standing in my boss’s house, in the dark, with his hand on my waist, and the only reason I was not more upset about this was because thirty seconds ago I thought I was going to faint.
He moved, slow and unhurried, the way he always moved, the concept of rushing had never occurred to him. He walked toward something along the wall, his hand leaving my waist for a few seconds, and then a faint light came on, just enough to fill the space.
I could see his face now, he looked different here. Same person, same jaw, same eyes but here the jacket was gone, his shirt was open at the collar, and he looked like someone who had been home for a while. Relaxed in a way I had never seen him at the office.
He lifted my chin with two fingers, not roughly, just tilting it up so I was looking at him properly and his mouth curved.
“Sorry for the surprise,” he said, still smiling.
I took a breath. “Did you…” I stopped, started again. “Did you trick me here, sir?” The words came out uneven but they came
out.
“You delivered a letter I needed,” he said simply.
“That was…” I looked at him. “That was a real letter? You had me come all the way here to deliver a letter Felix could have brought?”
“Shhh.” He pressed one finger lightly to my lips and I went quiet out of pure surprise because I had not been shushed since I was about seven years old and somehow it worked.
“Have you had dinner?” I stared at him.
“No,” he said, answering his own question. “Right.” He held my hand and walked, and because I apparently had no fight left in me after the cardiac event in the foyer, I let him lead me through a door at the far end of the room.
The dining room was already set. A proper table, good lighting, food already out, the kind of spread that did not appear in twenty minutes, it was now obvious… this had been planned.

Chapter 38
“I’m not hungry,” I said. “Just let me be on my way, sir.”
He raised an eyebrow at me.
“I added the sir.” I pointed out. “I was very polite.”

“Hmm.” He looked at me how you look at someone you find genuinely entertaining but were not going to tell. Are you sure about that?”
“Yes,” I said. “I’m…” My stomach made a noise.
I am not going to describe how loud it was. I will just say that in a room that quiet, with walls that thick, there was nowhere for it to go except directly between us in the worst possible way.
He did not say anything, he did not even have the kindness to pretend he hadn’t heard it. He just smiled and walked toward the table and pulled out a chair and stood beside it.
I sat down and I started eating. The food was excellent and I was not going to pretend otherwise just to make a point. The last time I had eaten something like this was in Mexico,
We ate mostly in silence, he did not try to make conversation and I did not try to fill the quiet and it should have been uncomfortable but it was not. Or maybe it was and I was too busy eating to notice.
When we were done he stood and gestured, that slight motion of his head that meant come, and I followed him back out to the large sitting room. The room that had been dark when I arrived was different now, still dim, but the television was on and the light from it moved across the walls.
He gestured toward the sofa and I sat down. Someone appeared with a glass of wine at some point, and looking up to the television, it was on a channel I recognized.
I looked at the screen and then looked at him. “This is one of my favorite shows,” I said.
He sat in the chair across from me, picked up his phone, and didn’t say anything.”
I pulled my feet up slightly and watched the screen and sipped my wine and told myself I would leave after this episode.
“I will be back,” he said at some point, standing. “Wait for me.”
He walked toward the staircase and up, and I watched him go and then turned back to the television.
Five minutes passed, then ten but I still continued watching. Fifteen minutes and I had finished half the wine and he had not come back down. I looked at the staircase, nothing, I looked at my phone, it was already ten.
I had come here for a file delivery, I had ended up having dinner in my boss’s house and watching my show on his sofa and the night was somehow still going.
I picked up my phone and called Felix and he answered on the second ring. “Bianca…”
“Can you help me inform the boss that I want to be on my way?” I said immediately.
“Okay but L…” Something moved at the top of the stairs. I looked up and saw him coming through a door on the upper floor. walking toward the top of the staircase.
‘No need to, he’s here.” I said and hung up on Felix mid sentence, which was rude but he would survive it.
Adrian came down the stairs slowly, he looked different again, like he had changed but not entirely, when he got close enough I saw what was in his hand but before I could look at it properly I remembered what I was supposed to be doing.
I want to be on my way, sir.” I said as he reached the bottom of the stairs.

He did not slow down, he did not hesitate, he did not give it a single second of consideration.
“No.” he said.
