The words sat between us for a moment, heavier than I expected them to be. Honestly, I hadn’t planned to say it that way or even plan any of this, but there they were, hanging in the air, and I wasn’t about to take them back.

She opened her mouth, her eyes still a little glassy from whatever emotion had been building in her. “Sir, I don’t…”

The office door banged open before she could finish, Felix walking in fast, papers in his hand, already talking before he even looked up. “So, the client…” he started, loud and easy like he always was, and then he actually looked at us properly and stopped mid sentence.

Bianca turned to face him, and whatever expression she had been wearing for me, she wore for him too, that same tight, unreadable look, like she was about to punch faces.

Felix glanced between the two of us slowly. “Am I interrupting something?”

Neither of us answered, Bianca just kept looking at him with that same face, and I could tell she wasn’t going to be the one o explain it, not to him, maybe not to anyone.

Felix cleared his throat, clearly picking up on the tension even if he didn’t understand it. “I’ll drop this here,” he said, setting the papers down on the edge of my desk. “No second report yet, when I get my hands on it I’ll come back and explain the vital parts.” He said it fast, already backing toward the door like he wanted to be anywhere else, and a second later he was gone, the door clicking shut behind him.

The quiet that followed felt different from the quiet before. Heavier, maybe or maybe I was just imagining that because of what I had said.

I took a breath, in and out, slow, trying to get my voice back to something steady, something that wouldn’t come out harsh or clipped the way it sometimes did when I was trying too hard not to feel something.

“I…” I started again.

“You know what,” I said instead, cutting myself off before I could finish whatever half formed thought had been building. “It’s already half a day.”

She looked at me, confused, her eyebrows pulling together slightly like she couldn’t tell if I was changing the subject on purpose or if I had genuinely lost my train of thought. Maybe both were true.

“So what I’m saying is, let’s leave it for now,” I said, keeping my tone even. “I’ll have someone go to your house. Pick your sister up, take care of her.” I paused, watching her face carefully. “Don’t worry, the person is trusted. So I’ll handle that, and then we can talk about this properly. Later.”

She stood there for a moment, not moving, clearly turning the offer over in her head, weighing whether to accept it or push back on the fact that I was once again arranging things around her life without asking first. I almost expected her to argue, given what had already happened between us that day.

“Okay, sir,” she said finally, and something in me loosened slightly at that.

She walked back over to her desk, and it was only then that I let myself actually look at her properly, and I noticed what she was wearing, a soft pink gown that fit close against her, showing the shape of her in a way that made it difficult to look away as quickly as I should have.

I caught myself staring a second too long before I forced my eyes back down to the papers Felix had left on my desk. Felix came back not long after with the second part of the document he promised, and I had no choice but to follow him to the meeting room, my mind still half on the conversation Bianca and I hadn’t finished.

We had partners to speak with, new contacts in a new country we were trying to bring on board, and it took hours longer than it should have, mostly because half the room kept getting distracted by side conversations that had nothing to do with the actual deal.

Lused some of that time to slip away into the private area attached to the meeting room, closing my eyes for what I told myself would be a short nap. It turned into longer than I meant, my body clearly more tired than I had let myself admit, and by the time I opened my eyes again, the light outside had shifted, gone from afternoon gold to the grey of early evening

I checked the time, “fuck!” I swore under my breath. Closing time was close, and if I didn’t hurry, Bianca would already be gone before I got the chance to stop her.

I moved fast through the hallway, ignoring a couple of people who tried to catch my attention on the way my focus narrowed down to one single goal, getting back to my office before she left the building.

Luck was on my side for once, when I stepped into my office, I caught her just as she was packing her stuff.

Leaving after everything I said earlier?” I said the moment I could catch my breath

She stopped and looked up at me surprised for a second before she managed to smooth it over. I thought you left, sir.”

I shook my head, already reaching for my phone as I walked toward her, dialing a number 1 knew well enough that I didn’t even have to look at the screen.

“Go to her house now and pick her up, I said into the phone the moment the call connected, my eyes steady on Bianca the entire time. Her sister will call soon to confirm.
