The auctioneer’s voice rang out again, “Oh, we have a new bid on the floor. Forty thousand dollars.” She scanned the room once more, giving it that dramatic pause auctioneers love so much.

“Forty thousand going once, going twice.” A short silence stretched across the ballroom,” okay GONE.” The necklace goes to Mr Adrian for forty thousand dollars.”

A soft applause rippled through the crowd, a few guests near our table turned to glance at Adrian with interest, some of them leaning to whisper to whoever sat beside them. I kept my eyes forward, my face burning, very aware that his hand hadn’t moved an inch from my thigh through the entire exchange.

“Why did you buy that?” I asked, keeping my voice low enough that only he could hear it.

“I like it.” he said. His fingers pressed slightly into my thigh as he said it, and I felt my whole body react before my brain. could even process what he meant by it.

I wanted to ask more, to push for a real answer, but the words just got stuck somewhere in my throat. I ended up sitting there in a strange kind of confusion, not upset exactly, just unsure what to do with the fact that a man had spent forty thousand dollars on a necklace that I said I liked while his hand sat on my leg.

The auctioneer clapped her hands together lightly at the podium. “We will take a little break now to distribute the items that have already been claimed. See you all again in thirty minutes.” The lights came back on slowly and the quiet hum of conversation returned almost instantly as people began standing and stretching from their seats.

Adrian stood first. his eyes had already drifted somewhere across the room, locked on a man standing near one of the side tables, and without another word to me, he walked off in that direction.

I barely had time to watch him go before I felt a tap on my shoulder from behind.

“Let’s walk around.” Amanda said, and I stood up immediately, grateful for something else to focus on.

“So y’all can’t even wait to get home?” she said the second we stepped away from the table, a teasing grin already spreading across her face.

I looked at her, confused. “What are you talking about?”

“His hand was on your thigh the whole time, young woman.” she said, raising her eyebrows so high I thought they might disappear into her hairline again.

I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped me. “That doesn’t mean anything, Amanda.”

Even as I said it, I knew it was a lie. My thigh still felt warm where his fingers had been, and the memory of it sat in my mind like something I wasn’t ready to look at too closely.

“Oh, if you say so.” she said, clearly not buying it for a second.

“How did you even get to see that?” I turned to her.

“I’ve got the sharpest eyes.” She laughed

Let me get us some drinks real quick.” Amanda turned and disappeared into the crowd before I could argue, leaving me standing alone near the edge of the room.

I pulled out my phone, mostly just to give my hands something to do, scrolling through nothing in particular, when a shadow fell across my screen I looked up and found a man standing in front of me, someone I vaguely recognized from the

CEO section earlier in the evening, tall, well dressed, with an easy kind of confidence in the way he carried himself.

“Hi, I’m…” he started, stretching his hand out toward me.

He didn’t get to finish the sentence. Adrian appeared from behind him, seemingly out of nowhere, his presence cutting the moment short before it had even really begun.

“Excuse me.” Adrian said smoothly, addressing the man directly. “I need you to fill out something for me quickly.” But he was taking to me

The man blinked, clearly caught off guard, but nodded anyway, glancing back at me with a small, apologetic smile. “See you later, when you’re done.” he said, and then he turned and walked off.

“I will be right back.” Adrian said and I stood there for a second, unsure what had just happened, watching the man and Adrian disappear into the crowd. It didn’t take long before Adrian reappeared, walking straight back toward me.

“Come with me.” he said, not really a question, because before I could respond, his hand found the small of my back, guiding me gently but firmly toward the outer edge of the ballroom, past the wide glass doors that led outside.

The night air hit me the moment we stepped out, there were a handful of people scattered around the terrace, some smoking, some just talking quietly in small groups, but it felt far less crowded out here, far more private.

“Turn around.” Adrian said once we were far enough from the doors.

I widened my eyes at him. “We are outside, sir.”

“Do as I say,” he said, his voice low but firm, leaving absolutely no room for argument.

I hesitated for a moment, glancing around at the few people nearby, none of whom seemed to be paying us any attention, and then I turned around slowly, my back now facing him, my heart thudding hard against my ribs.
