Her mouth opened and closed twice before any actual words came out, and that alone told me everything I needed to know. I had been guessing, throwing the words out there without any real proof behind them, just a hunch built from watching Julian’s hand linger too close to her arm earlier that night.

But the way she fumbled now, the way her eyes darted anywhere but my face, confirmed it better than any answer could have.

“I asked you a question,” I said again, keeping my voice level, watching her closely.

She nodded slowly, almost against her will, like her body had given up the fight before her mouth could catch up.

“But,” she started, lifting her chin slightly, trying to reclaim some of that fire she always carried like a stubborn woman, “I still don’t get how any of this is your concern, and…”

She didn’t get to finish, I leaned in before she could land the rest of her sentence, closing the small distance between us, and kissed her.

She went stiff for a moment, her whole body frozen against the seat like she wasn’t sure whether to pull away or lean in, and for a few seconds that felt a lot longer than they actually were, I genuinely thought she might push me back but then her body shifted.

Her shoulders relaxed first, then her hand came up slowly and found the front of my jacket, gripping it instead of shoving me away, and she eased into the kiss like she had been waiting all night for exactly this.

I don’t know how long it lasted, long enough that I lost track of everything around us, long enough that the quiet hum of the engine and the occasional flash of streetlight through the window faded into the background completely.

She shifted at some point, and before either of us fully registered how it happened, she was sitting across my lap, her knees pressed against the seat on either side of me, the fabric of her dress bunching slightly at her thighs.

My hands found her waist first, then slid lower, settling against her, and I couldn’t tell anymore if it was the pull I had been fighting all day, the one that had been building since I first saw her in that dress this evening, or if it was something else entirely, something more possessive stirring in me because Julian had gotten too close to her tonight. Maybe it was both. I didn’t care enough at the moment to sort out which.

She finally broke away first, pulling back just enough to breathe, her chest rising and falling fast against mine, her lipstick slightly smudged now. Neither of us said anything right away, the only sound in the car was the two of us trying to catch our

breath.

“Sir,” she finally managed, her voice barely holding together.

I cut her off before she could get any further, reaching for my phone instead. I dialed Felix’s number, and he picked up on the second ring.

“The driver can come now,” I said, and tossed the phone onto the seat beside me without waiting for a reply.

“Like I said earlier,” I continued, turning my attention back to her, “I’ll have someone arrange for your sister to be picked up by some of the…”

“Don’t worry, Amanda will do that,” she said quickly, cutting me off before I could finish.

I promised to take care of…”

“Unless you want to take care of her and Amanda too,” she said, one eyebrow lifting slightly, a small smirk tugging at her lips.

I didn’t have a good answer for that, so I let it go. “Okay, if you say so,” I said instead. “Now can we go home?”

Before she could respond, the driver’s door opened and he slid into his seat, adjusting the mirror out of habit before glancing back at us. “Can I move now, sir?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said, and he started the engine without another word, pulling smoothly out of the parking area and onto the road.

Bianca had barely settled back into her own seat when her phone buzzed against her lap. She glanced down and unlocked it, and I caught the name from the corner of my eye without meaning to. Amanda okay, that is fine, I mean… that’s her friend.

She was halfway through typing a reply when the phone buzzed again, this time from a number that clearly wasn’t saved in her contacts. I saw the message before she had the chance to close it out.

“Hi there, your friend gave me your number as promised.”

My jaw tightened almost instantly, other men from the event. probably, or worse, exactly who I thought it was. I looked away quickly, back toward the window, because there was nothing I could say about it that wouldn’t expose the fact that I had been reading her messages over her shoulder like some kind of jealous teenager.

She wasn’t mine, not officially, not in any way either of us had actually put into words, so I didn’t have the right to complain no matter how much it was eating at me right then.
