Chapter 97
Bianca
I walked back into the office still holding some pieces of the conversation with Victoria in my head. Her voice kept replaying and I tried to shake it off before I got to my desk, because the last thing I needed was for anyone to notice something was wrong with me. Especially not Amanda, I wouldn’t want any further chaos.
Adrian hadn’t been around since morning. His office door stayed shut the whole time, and even Felix, who usually popped in and out hadn’t been seen anywhere around this place either. I settled into my seat and tried to focus on the files piling up, but my mind kept drifting back to that restaurant table and the way Victoria had looked at me like she already knew how the story would end.
It was almost an hour later when I heard footsteps and voices coming down the hallway. I looked up just in time to see Adrian walk in with Felix beside him and another man I didn’t bother to study properly. Adrian’s eyes caught mine for a second, and before he looked away, he winked at me and I couldn’t control how my heart did somersaults over something so small.
I quickly dropped my gaze back to my screen, pretending to be deeply invested in a document I hadn’t read a single line of. I could hear their voices as time passed, low and businesslike, they were discussing something about numbers and timing. It didn’t take long before they disappeared into his inner office, and I let out a breath.
Minutes passed. I tried to work, but I kept glancing toward the inner door every few seconds like a fool. Then the door opened again, and the three of them walked out together, still talking. From what I could catch, it sounded less like a normal meeting and more like they were finalizing where an actual meeting would happen later.
Adrian didn’t even look my way this time, he just walked past with the two men, out through the main doors, and the office went quiet again.
I busied myself with the files, glancing up once in a while just to be sure no one else was around. When I noticed the coast was completely clear and was about to take some work pictures as usual, the door creaked and Adrian strolled back in alone, hands in his pockets, looking far too relaxed for someone who had just left a serious looking meeting.
He walked straight to my desk and leaned against it, arms folded, studying me with that familiar bossy look on his face.
“So you haven’t used that card, angry bird,” he said, tilting his head.
I rolled my eyes at the nickname. “It’s been three days,Sir. Calm down. I’ll use it.”
“Mm-hmm.” He didn’t sound convinced, but he let it go, which surprised me a little. “Anyway, I’m heading out for a meeting. I might not be back early or might not even come back to the office at all today.”
“Okay,” I said, keeping my voice even, though something in me wished he would just stay.
He straightened up and started walking toward the door, and that was when I remembered. I should tell him about how Victoria came to meet me at the restaurant and he things she said. “Adrian,” I called out before I could stop myself.
He turned around immediately. “Yes?”
I opened my mouth, but the words got stuck somewhere between my chest and my throat. What was I even going to say? That his ex wife came to find me at my job? That she practically warned me about him without saying it outright? It felt petty saying it out loud, and I didn’t want him thinking I was the jealous type keeping tabs on his past.
“Nothing,” I said, shaking my head. “Just be safe.”
