Saying this, Madeline reached out to grab Virginia's hand again, but Virginia smoothly shifted half a step back, dodging her touch.
A suffocating silence instantly descended upon the consultation room.
"Mom, this slot was determined by the organizing committee based on my scores. It's not something I can just casually hand over." Virginia looked up, trying to reason with her.
"You just need to tell the committee that you have a scheduling conflict and voluntarily withdraw. Chloe placed second, so as long as you drop out, she'll naturally step up to deliver the lecture!"
Madeline made it sound so incredibly trivial, a hint of smug satisfaction already bleeding into her eyes.
"Your clinic has already built a solid reputation. You don't need one more speech. But it's entirely different for Chloe. She just got back into the country and is in desperate need of exposure."
Virginia stared at her, wrapped in a long, unbroken silence.
It lasted so long that Madeline's smile grew painfully stiff, right up until the exact moment she was about to lose her last shred of patience. Then, Virginia finally spoke.
"I won't give it up."
Madeline's face froze, a sharp glare of immense displeasure quickly surfacing in her eyes.
But Virginia didn't budge an inch. Instead, she continued coldly, "This opportunity is incredibly important to me too. Besides, the process is already in the final confirmation stage. It's impossible to change it halfway through."
She stood up, her voice devoid of any warmth. "If Chloe wants an opportunity like this, she can try somewhere else. Or at the very worst, she can try again next year."
Madeline's face turned a livid shade of purple. Her lips parted as she prepared to unleash a tirade, but Virginia had already walked back behind her desk.
"Mom, I have a few more patients to see this afternoon, so I won't see you out."
The conversation was officially over. Sticking around any longer would just be humiliating herself.
Madeline clutched her designer bag tightly, stood up, and stormed toward the door.
Just as she reached the threshold, Virginia's voice rang out behind her once more.
"Mom, I despise seafood. The one who loves seafood soup... is Chloe."
