Archer drove smoothly, the Maybach cruising effortlessly down the city’s main boulevard.
Virginia, Helena, and Cindy sat in the back seat.
"Virginia, that apartment of yours is way too cramped, and the security is terrible," Helena said earnestly, holding Virginia's hand. "I have a vacant villa in South Hill. The environment is gorgeous and perfect for recovery. You should stay there for a while."
Saying this, Helena shot a pointed glance at Archer through the rearview mirror. "Virginia just got out of the hospital and needs proper care. No more working late every single night. You make sure she’s looked after, you hear me?"
Before Archer could even acknowledge the command, Virginia reflexively declined. "Helena, please don't go to all that trouble. I'll just go back to my apartment. Mrs. Benson comes by every day; she can take care of Cindy and me perfectly well."
"Mrs. Benson doesn't have Archer's attention to detail."
From the driver’s seat, Archer flicked his gaze to the rearview mirror, his voice a low, commanding rumble. "I know that South Hill property. It's only a ten-minute drive from the kindergarten. It’s vastly more convenient than your apartment."
Virginia froze.
She had specifically chosen her current apartment because the rent was cheap and it kept her far away from the Caldwells.
The location was remote, and the commute was a nightmare. Even in a cab, dropping Cindy off and picking her up wasted at least an hour every day.
With her current physical condition, there was no way she could manage those trips herself anytime soon...
Seeing the brief hesitation flicker across Virginia's face, Helena immediately shot Cindy a knowing look.
The clever little girl caught on instantly. She wrapped her tiny arms around Virginia’s arm and turned on the charm. "Mommy, I want to live at Helena's house! I want to live with Archer! Please?"
Staring into her daughter’s pleading, massive eyes, Virginia swallowed the refusal that was on the tip of her tongue. After a long pause, she finally nodded.
"Alright."
...
The black Maybach glided effortlessly into the exclusive, mid-mountain villa community at South Hill.
The car door opened. Archer held a sleeping Cindy securely in one arm, using his free hand to shield the roof of the car for Virginia.
The digital lock chimed as the door opened.
