Over the past five years, he had never given Chloe a single ounce of genuine romance, but he had undeniably invested real time and effort into raising this boy.

He simply couldn't bring himself to ruthlessly reject the child.

Chloe lowered her head, a victorious smirk pulling at the corners of her lips.

When Archer walked back to Virginia, she didn't turn around. Instead, Cindy let go of Virginia's hand and hugged his leg.

"Mr. Vanderbilt, why is Toby crying?"

He patted the little girl's head and scooped her up. "He's probably just hungry."

With that, he turned to look at Virginia. "Virginia."

Virginia lifted her eyes, her tone incredibly flat. "Are you done talking?"

"Yeah." Archer looked at her, wanting to tell her that he had to go back to Bayview Manor tonight for Toby's birthday. But his throat bobbed, and he couldn't force the words out.

But as if sensing something, Virginia suddenly spoke. "I'm tired. Let's go home."

Her mood had noticeably plummeted. She didn't even spare him another glance before turning on her heel and heading for the exit.

Archer frowned.

He instinctively reached out to grab her wrist, but his hand closed around empty air.

Outside the aquarium.

The second they stepped through the doors, a wave of oppressive heat hit them. Virginia furrowed her brow in discomfort.

She was just about to ask when the car would arrive, or if they needed to walk to the parking lot, when the familiar Maybach pulled up directly in front of them.

He had texted Zachary Cole the moment she stormed off.

Zachary opened the door. Archer calmly strapped Cindy into her car seat, stepping back out of habit to give Virginia room. But she had already walked around the back of the car and slid into the other side.
