"All done. Doctor White's recommendation was spot on. Dr. Caldwell is incredibly professional and genuine. Fantastic work," Carlton beamed, full of praise.

He then glanced between Virginia and Archer, a knowing smile spreading across his face.

"You know, seeing you two standing next to each other... you actually make quite a striking couple."

Archer stiffened and remained silent.

"You're joking, Mr. Lambert. I'm far out of Mr. Vanderbilt's league," Virginia replied smoothly, her tone perfectly polite.

Hearing her dismiss him so easily sent a sharp pang through Archer's chest. He opened his mouth, but the words died in his throat.

Carlton chuckled, completely missing the tension. "Don't sell yourself short, Dr. Caldwell. I think highly of you. Honestly, if I didn't know Archer was already taken, I'd try to set you two up myself."

Virginia just smiled and began organizing the files on her desk.

Unbothered, Carlton clapped his hands together. "Tell you what, let's celebrate our new partnership. Dinner is on me tonight. You have to join us, Dr. Caldwell."

Virginia was about to decline, but Carlton cut her off. "No excuses! Doctor White told me how exceptional you are. For his sake, you have to do me this honor."

With Archer there, she dreaded the idea, but Carlton was her mentor's VIP client and a brand-new business partner. Refusing would have been incredibly rude.
