The living room fell into a brief silence at those words.

The next second, Virginia's expression grew serious. She sat up straight, her tone turning stern. "Cindy, do you remember what Mommy told you?"

Cindy shrank back a little, her small hands hugging the doll tighter.

"Mr. Archer can never be your daddy." Virginia looked intently at Cindy, a flash of painful clarity in her eyes. "Mr. Archer is married. He has his own family and his own precious child. You can't say things like that anymore."

Cindy's eyes immediately filled with tears, her nose turning red. But she forced herself not to cry out loud, nodding vigorously. "I know. I won't say it anymore."

Seeing the little girl's obedient, holding-back demeanor, Virginia felt a heavy weight in her chest. She clenched her fists, forced herself to stand, and said, "Mrs. Benson, could you take Cindy back to her room? I'm going to take a shower and then I'll put her to bed."

The sound of running water soon came from the bathroom.

Mrs. Benson took Cindy back to her little bed, placed Nine next to her, dimmed the lights, and left.

Cindy glanced at the door, hugged Nine, and whispered, "Nine, Nine, call Mr. Archer."

The city lights flashed past the window, illuminating his profile, making his already cold, distant features seem even sharper and more unyielding.

Frowning, his long fingers swiped to answer, but he didn't speak.

It wasn't until the little girl's soft, slightly muffled voice came through the speaker—"Mr. Archer, it's me, Cindy."

Archer's movements froze, his gaze turning somber for a moment.

"Mommy went to take a shower, so I called you in secret." Cindy sniffled, her voice still a little thick. "Thank you for the doll you gave me. I like it so, so much."
