Chapter 110
Maya
“And what if I don’t have just one mate?”
The words hung between us longer than I expected them to.
Elise’s expression changed almost immediately, the teasing edge she usually carried slipping away as something like realization settled in. Her brows drew together slowly, her gaze sharpening as if she was seeing the shape of the problem all at once, and I watched the moment it fully landed.
“Oh shit,” she breathed. “I didn’t even think about that.”
That did not help.
She pushed her chair back slightly and ran a hand through her hair, eyes flicking to the ceiling like the answer might be written there.
“Okay. So. Even though you’re only fully mated to Caden, the others are going to sense it. Your heat, I mean. Once it starts, it won’t matter that the bonds aren’t complete. It’ll be nearly impossible for them to resist you, Maya.”
My stomach dropped as I buried my face in my hands.
They’re going to kill each other. I just know it.
A cold, creeping fear slid down my spine.
“When is the next full moon?” I asked, already dreading the answer.
Elise reached for her phone, scrolling quickly before pausing. Her face went pale.
“The day after tomorrow,” she said. “You might start showing signs tomorrow.”
My breath stuttered.
The room felt too small suddenly, the walls pressing in like they were listening. My pulse thrummed in my ears, loud and uneven, and instinctively I reached inward, toward the familiar warmth coiled inside my chest.
Is there any way we can not go into heat this month?’ I asked silently, directing the question toward Aelera with more desperation than dignity.
There was no response.
I tried again, firmer this time, frustration bleeding into the thought. Tim serious. This isn’t a good time.’
Still nothing.
Then, faintly, like a brush of fingertips against the back of my mind, I felt it. It wasn’t Aelera, but something quieter that I’ve come to recognize as the ever-present but ever-quiet Astrid.
And she was… Amused.
The sensation carried no words, just the barest hint of humor, like laughter muffled behind stone.
“What the hell is so funny?” I muttered under my breath.
Elise tilted her head. “What?”
