Chapter 156
HUNTER
Subduing Kostas had been too easy.

His bruises were already fading, skin knitting together beneath the blanket draped over his shoulders. That wild, erratic energy still clung to him, coiling beneath his skin, and his eyes were still red-rimmed. But he was calm. Maybe too calm.
His eyes were dead, and he wasn’t screaming about killing us. He wasn’t demanding to see Kitty. He wasn’t even looking at
Her scent was all over me, all over my skin, and it was fresh.
Kostas smelled it the moment he settled beside me in the back seat. He could smell what I’d done with his precious sister- mate. His nostrils flared, and yellow bled briefly into his eyes before vanishing again. His jaw tightened just once, then he turned his gaze back to the window with his shoulders hunched.
He must have run all the way from Lordswood territory. How the hell had he even found Nathan’s hideout? Even with that sharp tang of his distress hanging over him like a cloud, I could smell the trap threaded through it.
Kostas wasn’t the type to give up. When he’d appeared at the mansion, he hadn’t asked for Kitty even once. He’d just stood there, bare and unashamed, waiting for me to act. Waiting for retribution.
To my credit, I’d only broken his face a few times while his brother watched from an upstairs window.
Was this the new angle? To let me hurt him. To let Kitty see what I was capable of. To push me until I snapped, until blood was on my hands, so they could whisper, ‘See? Evil runs in his veins.’
“How long have you known her?”
The question came out of nowhere. I didn’t answer.
“I thought I heard her on the phone a couple of times,” Kostas continued. “And then in your elevator at the Bureau. Her scent was faint, barely there. I thought I was imagining it.”
One of the first things I taught my agents was to never volunteer information; no matter how trivial.
I straightened my cuff of the suit Tanner had given me and looked outside. We’d been driving for hours; dawn would break soon. Kitty would be pissed off when she woke and found out I was gone.
“Is that why she defends you?” Kostas asked. “Because you’ve already defiled her and turned her head?”
“She enjoys how I defile her.”
I couldn’t help myself. From the corner of my eye, I saw his fist clench beneath the blanket.
“So all this time, it wasn’t Nathan, it was you,” he muttered. “She’s not mated.”
I’d let him hope, and then watch how thoroughly I crushed it under my foot.
The coven knew, or Zachary at least, that Kitty was mine. They hadn’t told him. That meant they had something big planned, a final play to take Kitty from me. Something that involved this fool.
“Nathan knew her, too, didn’t he? And he watched me run around and fall apart,” Kostas said with a humourless chuckle.
The drawbridge loomed ahead. Only one guard stood watch where there should have been at least half a dozen. The drawbridge began to lower before we were even close enough. Even from the car, I could tell the guard just didn’t give a shit.

Chapter 156
“The land would rot, and the pack would scatter.’

My gaze went to the stagnant, murky moat that had once thrived with life, and the wilted trees with dull, lifeless leaves. Compared to the dense trees in the boundary forest, the difference was more shocking.
Because Kitty chose me.
No. This wasn’t about Kitty’s choice. It was about the greed of the people around her. I looked away from the decay and faced straight ahead.
“You’ve changed her,” Kostas said quietly.
“She hasn’t changed. She’s becoming who she’s meant to be.”
A queen. The omega who could crush them with just a word. Even when the tides changed, and she didn’t want that title, it would be hers for life.
“Does she know who you are?” he asked.
I didn’t look at him.
“I can’t imagine she would choose the beast who slaughtered her bloodline over her last remaining family.”
My fingers twitched.
“Believe it,” I said. “After the full moon, I’ll show you all the ways that Katerina is mine. Just try to survive long enough to see it.”
Kostas chuckled again and adjusted his blanket.
“Did you notice how easily I walked through your wards?” he asked. “You know I won’t hurt her. I’m the one chosen for her.”
“But she didn’t choose you, Kostas.”
The temperature dropped. The first real reaction I’d had from Kostas.
The castle gates stood wide open, without a single guard in place. No movement. The land was silent in a way that had nothing to do with the late hour.
The Lordswoods had fallen.
“I’ll come back,” Kostas said as the car slowed. “Today. Tomorrow. I’ll show her I’m the only one she can rely on.”
“And you thought telling me this was a good idea?”
Kostas turned, a crooked, unhinged smile twisting his mouth.
“This is bigger than you, Your Majesty.” That title sounded like he was mocking me. “You can’t change what is already fated.”
My beast snarled. Rage exploded in my chest. Then Tanner opened my door, and I remembered what I was fighting for. 1 stepped out as my agents dragged the Lordswood prince from the car.
After what felt like an eternity, the castle doors creaked open, and an older man in his pyjamas peered out. Terror flooded his scent when his gaze landed on me.
He opened the doors wider and stepped aside.
“Your Majesty,” he whispered. “Forgive us. We weren’t expecting visitors.”
