No one objected, but I didn’t miss the calculating glances sliding between tables.

Kostas had said wolves like me didn’t last long. That we were abominations that disrupted the natural order. I’d tried to look it up, but there wasn’t much in any of the books available to me

Td searched every term I could think of. Rare wolves. White woes. White wolf omega abominations. Very little surfaced, except that wolves like that had to be reported immediately. That word had unsettled me. Reported. For execution?

I still couldn’t figure out if that was the reason I’d so easily taken achary’s magic from him, or if it had something to do with the bond I’d shared with Hunter.

Because I’d looked up werewolf and Lycan bonds, too, and there still wasn’t much. There was far more written about the bloodshed than the connection. Only now I’d learned that Lycans possessed abilities werewolves could only dream of. Had he shared that with me through the bond?

If he had, then why didn’t those abilities vanish when the bond broke?

Now, my father had just placed me at the centre of the kingdoms future, under a spotlight that would never turn off.

The Carters rose slowly, their fury carefully masked behind forced composure. They weren’t the only ones unsettled. I could scent resentment in the air, and some disappointment, too. But i was mostly still fear.

What sort of Queen would I be if my pack feared me?

No objections from me.” Hunter called out.

His aara spread outwards subtly, but deliberately. The shift in the air was immediate. Wolves near him shuffled away, heads lowering instinctively as they registered the predator standing among them.

Then he drew it back. It was controlled and calculated. If he was publicly backing me as heir, then what would that make

For the first time since entering the hall, I looked at him properly. Black custom suit. Royal blue pocket square and tie that marched my dress perfectly. The fabric skimmed over his broad shoulders, muscular arms, and thick thighs. He stood at least a head taller than the other guests, imposing even without the aura.

I’d only seen him dressed like this a handful of times, and every single one of those memories sent my thoughts somewhere dangerous.

My toes curled, and I forced myself to look away. It didn’t matter if he supported me. How could I ever trust a man who’d betrayed me so completely?

Instead. I searched for Kostas. He kept his head bowed; I couldn’t read his expression. I didn’t know if that announcement relieved him or wounded him. All our lives, I’d believed he would stand beside me as the beta. Now even that future had dissolved.

Father linked his arm with mine, but I felt the tension beneath his smile. He hadn’t wanted the Lycan King’s endorsement any more than I did. Still, something tightened around my heart Letting go of Hunter would take time; I’d loved him too deeply to pretend otherwise. But I wished I could fast-forward through the heartbreak.

“There is more.” Father said before turning to face me and taking my hands in his. “Katerina will not be required to take a mate in order to rule. She will inherit the title in her own right. And until she’s ready to assume full responsibility, she is free to live as she wishes. Whether within these walls or beyond them

Beyond. Among humans? The words echoed in my skull.

Shock rippled through the hall. I stared at my father, trying to understand what he’d just done. Was he freeing me or pushing me out? Was this exile dressed as opportunity? Had I become too dangerous to keep contained?

My lungs tightened painfully. I hadn’t wanted to return home, but inside these walls, at least I knew the damage I could cause. But with me outside, the pack would be safer.

Father stepped back, applause rose again, thinner this time. I heard every whisper threaded beneath it.

“An omega inheriting the kingdom is already unheard of. Now they want her to rule alone?”

“Is that because of the Lordswood bloodline? It’s not that special

“But how is she so strong?”

“Is an omega supposed to do that? An omega commanding alphas is-”

“There has to be something else they’re hiding. She’s gone from weak omega they were trying to pawn off to this.”

The fist around my heart tightened. Father heard them too, but he stood taller.

“Tonight, eat, drink and celebrate,” he said, pride thick in his voice. “My little girl has grown up and is ready to take on the world.”

I wasn’t. I was barely holding myself together.

My gaze found Hunter across the hall. His expression was warm and pride sat openly in his eyes. He didn’t approach me or step forward to stand by my side. He didn’t claim space near the throne.

Throughout dinner, Hunter sat at our table but never claimed Father’s head seat. He could have, and no one would have stopped him. His restraint felt louder than any display of dominance. Still, I refused to look at him.

Instead, I watched the servers move between the tables, their posture straighter than before. Omegas sat among the guests instead of hovering behind them, laughing quietly.

Father truly was changing things.

I noticed Nathan glaring at Kostas from across the room, and April sitting alone at another table. But my mind was too fractured to untangle their tension tonight.

Was Father simply trying to remove the problem gently? They were healthier now; even if that day came, it wouldn’t be

soon.

When the music swelled, and guests began drifting to the ballroom, I slipped outside for air. The courtyard was cooler and quieter.

A figure leaning on one of the pillars outside made me stop. Kosths. I hadn’t known he’d woken, so I wasn’t prepared to face him. What could I say when I was the reason he’d almost died?

I turned to leave, but his voice stopped me.

“Katerina.”

He shuffled behind me, but I didn’t turn.

“I know I have no right to stand in front of you,” he said quietly, but I’m sorry.”

There was no arrogance in his voice now. Not even pride.

“And thank you.”

I frowned and turned.

“For what?”

“For not killing me.”

His voice lowered. “I didn’t know how to stop it. This thing… It just kept growing. I could hear the words I said. I could see what I was doing. But I just couldn’t stop myself.”

He swallowed and blinked back tears.

“I knew death was the only way out. You could have killed me, like you did the others.”

I numbed my mind, but it didn’t stop those memories from filtering through.

“I didn’t mean to spare you,” I said honestly.

He nodded once.

“I know. You still did.”

And then he bowed-properly. I’d never seen him bow like that, even to Father.

“I owe you my life, Your Highness.”

“You don’t owe me anything.”

Especially when I’d wanted him dead.

I stepped further into the courtyard, staring up at the sky. The new moon peeked through thinning clouds.

“You’ll make a great Queen.”

“Don’t say that.” Kostas knew what I was. He knew that the throne would never really be mine.

“You deserve it more than anybody,” he said. “You fought for what was right, even at the risk of your own life.”

I fought because the monster inside me wanted blood.

“I’m leaving,” he said.

My brows lifted. Would he be safe out there? Zachary had what happened to his pack generations before.
