Nathan’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. The engine cut, and the city noise rushed back in-traffic, footsteps, a distant siren. It was normal. Ordinary. It felt like a whole lifetime since I’d been here.

I’d left in a hurry, fearing for my life, and now I returned the same way. Only the threats had changed. I wasn’t sure if the pain in my chest was going to kill me or the werewolves, once they knew what I was.

And honestly, fearing discovery wasn’t taking up as much space in my head as the words that kept echoing in it.

‘Disgusting bloodline.’

So what did that make me? A toy? A plaything? What about all his promises? Hunter’s betrayal was worse than I first realised. He hadn’t just lied to me, he’d played me from the beginning. I was the tool he’d used to get his revenge on my family, as if we were the ones who’d wronged the Lycans.

I dragged my thoughts away from him and looked outside the window.

“You’re going to stare at the building all night.”

I didn’t move.

“Maybe,” I whispered.

“Do you want to come back to Mal’s with me?” Nathan asked softly.

He’d not spoken the whole way, driving through the night without stopping. And I hadn’t noticed a single second of it. I’d stayed locked inside my own head, numb, knowing if I let myself unravel, I might never put myself back together again.

“Mal will worry,” I said eventually.

Mal was probably the only person I could trust now. And I couldn’t even question his ties to Nathan, because in the end, Nathan was the one I’d relied on the most.

“He’s been worried the whole time. You should take some time to put his mind at ease,” Nathan suggested. “When you’re ready.”

I nodded and inhaled, finally forcing myself to focus on practical things. I was back home. Reintegrating was my priority. Learning to live with humans without hurting them. Keeping busy. Anything to pretend the past few weeks hadn’t happened.

“What will you do now?” I asked, finally turning to look at him.

He looked wrecked. I hadn’t let myself think about his confession. But if I hadn’t seen what him actually falling for someone looked like, I might have believed he’d felt something real for me.

“Lay low. Figure things out somewhere peaceful,” he said. “Mal’s place is perfect for that.”

“You set the wards up around his property, didn’t you?”

“I didn’t, actually,” he said with a small smile.

Then, where had Mal found someone that powerful?

Chapter 188

“Learn to centre yourself,” Nathan said. “It helps control the magic.”

I’d forgotten about that. I’d stolen my magic, but Nathan had been born with his. Even Zachary feared him.

I looked down at the pendant around my neck. It steadied me, like Nathan had said it would. But how did he know so much? He wasn’t a Lycan. Abilities weren’t common for him. Yet he’d taken on that dark magic like-

I sucked in a breath.

Nathan had sealed that magic away. Not survived it, not endured it, but sealed it.

“You’re from the Ironclaw pack,” I said.

That was why he’d been so confident that mating would fix everything. Why Hunter’s jealousy had burned so violently. The Lycan King must have known.

“I’m just a rogue,” he said. “It’s better not to be bound to anyone.

The air shifted with his emotion. I could feel even the slightest fluctuation as easily as breathing. Why had he left April behind if she affected him that much?

“Is that why the Blackmores wanted you?” I pressed. “Why they saved you when you were infected? You were their plan B?”

“Hmm,” he answered.

“Does Kostas know?”

His fingers twitched almost imperceptibly before he said, “I don’t know.”

More secrets. They had been friends before this happened. I’d wondered why he’d worried so much about Kostas and the pack, why he accused me of being selfish.

“You knew Kostas had Ironclaw blood from the beginning,” I said

Nathan paused a beat before he nodded. And suddenly I saw it. Where Kostas’ hair was curly and long, Nathan’s was short. But they shared the same shade of her. The same brown eyes. It was subtle but undeniable.

It might have been a stretch to assume this just because they had originated from the same pack. But I couldn’t unsee it.

“Why did you, a rogue with the human kingdom as your playground, befriend my brother?”

The silence thickened. In the distance, the sky began to lighten. I suddenly felt bone tired as the truth hit me.

“Brothers?” I whispered.

Why did everyone in my life keep the truth from me?

“He doesn’t know,” Nathan said, finally breaking the silence. “We were separated the day he was born. The day we became orphans.”

He adjusted his cuffs, still not meeting my eyes.

“I went from pack to pack looking for him. When I found him, I saw he had a great life. A better one than I could give him. I didn’t want to interfere. But the past few weeks changed everything. Complicated things. I don’t know when I’ll tell him.”

He fell silent again. From the passenger seat, I watched the sun creep higher over the city’s skyline.

“Do you want to rest here?” I asked.

Chapter 188

“That’s not a good idea. Hunter will be here soon.”

Hearing his name nearly broke me, but I forced the feeling dow

“So what if he is? This is my apartment.”

Nathan smiled faintly, like he already knew how this story would end.

“I liked you,” he said. “From the moment you beat up my guy in the gym. Hunter was right to be jealous.”

Why was he saying all this now, when it was April he was pining for?

“I would have fought for you. I did fight for you. But nothing beats a mate bond.”

“There’s nothing between Hunter and me,” I growled.

“Are you sure? Because you still act like you’re mated.”

My heart slammed against my chest.

“I used to wonder what would have happened if I’d let you finish what you started when you came into heat. If you’d followed through after kissing me like that.”

Shame prickled across my skin. I hadn’t been in my right mind then.

He sighed.

“Then April came along, and I questioned everything. Did I fuck her because I couldn’t have you? Or did she actually matter?”

This was the first time Nathan had made himself vulnerable in front of me. There was no cockiness in his voice, just honesty.

“You won’t find out by running from her?”

I had no idea why I was speaking up for April when I wasn’t sure how I felt about her anymore. But focusing on Nathan was better than thinking about anything else.

“It’s better this way,” Nathan said.

Traffic began to build up as the world woke.

“The truth isn’t always black and white,” he said quietly. “But sometimes it is. Maybe I just have to say yes to April, and you say yes to Hunter, and everything settles.”
