I wore my calm mask, but by lunchtime, my head was ready to split. The pressure had been building since Carl Stevens had smiled at me and told me I’d be working as the Director’s Execuive Assistant. As if it were a gift.
I’d pulled the shadows back so many times that a heavy ache had settled behind my ribs. Every time they stirred, I crushed them down. Every time my wolf surged, I leashed her.
How was I supposed to work this close to the source of my rage I couldn’t hold it together? That wasn’t just reckless; that was suicidal.
And worse still, I could hurt someone.
Maybe I was just hungry. I hadn’t eaten since I’d got back to the apartment, and I’d been in too much of a rush to eat that morning.
The executive cafeteria was nothing like the one on the ground floor. It sat closer to the top of the building, tucked behind layers of security, and looked more like a five-star restaurant than a workplace dining hall.
Polished marble floors. Velvet-backed chairs. Soft lighting. Crystal glasses.
It explained a lot. No wonder the “peasants” hadn’t known who Hunter was when he’d lied about his identity that first day. He never mixed with them.
I almost snorted at the memory.
Goddess, I’d been such an idiot. He’d lied to me from the beginning, lied about who he was and what he wanted, and I’d let him back into my bed anyway. He wasn’t the fool; I was.
The temperature dipped. Shadows crept around the edges of my vision like smoke curling under a door. I forced them back and drew on my wolf’s strength. She didn’t resist; she was too busy simmering, but she lent me enough stability to breathe through it.
When the chill eased, I scanned the room. Several heads had lifted, and a few had gone still, their instincts pricked. They were predators sensing that something was off.
Half a morning. That was how long I’d lasted before nearly exposing myself. I needed to get this under control.
A waiter approached, listing the day’s specials in a polished voice I ordered something random and let my gaze wander again-werewolves, Lycans, vampires, and others that I couldn’t place. There were no humans at this level.
Their meals arrived quickly, tailored precisely to their species. They spoke lightly, personal matters only, no work talk. A single slip of confidential information could destroy kingdoms. Mr Stevens had hammered that point in thoroughly.
When my plate arrived, I focused on eating. On grounding myself in something physical and simple to ease the pressure in
head. Chew. Swallow, Breathe. And repeat.
my
“Have you heard. The Director got himself an assistant.”
My fork paused halfway to my mouth. I didn’t look at them immediately. Their whispers were close enough to carry.
“Yes. I heard she’s a pretty little human thing.”
Human. I’d masked myself so well that they couldn’t tell what I was. That, at least, was something. Anything not to be suspected as the white wolf monster that slayed Lycans by myself.

“She won’t last a day,” another voice chimed in. “The Director is brutal. I heard he didn’t have an assistant because, in the beginning, they never lasted. Some are still missing.”
A ripple of laughter.
“He likes a little… overtime.”
More giggles. My hands tightened around my cutlery before I forced my fingers to relax. Hunter wasn’t mine, he’d never really been mine. As a powerful, handsome Lycan male, it wouldn’t have been unusual for him to have women in his bed.
Would he go back to that lifestyle now? Back to faceless bodies, asy distractions, and convenience? That unwanted thought sliced deep.
“She’s not just any human,” one of them whispered. “She’s that intern. The one they made a big deal about before sticking her in Legal to fetch coffee.”
“Really? I thought she was fired?”
“Guess we know how she ended up next to the Director.”
The table erupted again. Heat flooded my face, not from embarrassment but from rage. Someone in the room cleared their throat, and the women fell silent, but it was too late. Images assaulted me-Hunter’s hands, his mouth, his weight over me. The dream.
And then, him doing those same things with someone else.
My stomach twisted violently, and I dropped my balled fists to my lap. How could I still want him? How broken did that make me, to fall for someone who’d never wanted me in the first place?
Someone who had called my blood disgusting.
“Is the AC broken?”
“Why is it so cold?”
Goosebumps rose along my arms. I inhaled and focused, but magic roared in my veins, louder this time, and harder to contain. A red tinge edged my vision as my wolf surged forward pressing against me, fury clouding everything.
I wasn’t just suppressing Zachary’s magic; I was fighting my own instincts. And I was losing.
My phone vibrated against the table, and Nathan’s name flashed on the screen.
‘Heading out tonight. Meet me at the gym.
The gym. Air rushed back into my lungs. I latched onto the word like a lifeline and dragged my wolf back by sheer will. The red faded, and the shadows that had started to creep from the corners dissolved.
“What was that?” someone whispered.
“Is it someone in the basement?”
The basement was where I’d been interrogated, where they kept the prisoners that they were still processing. Where they’d probably keep me, too, when they discovered the truth.
The temperature steadied, but the unease lingered. I felt eyes scnning the room, but no one looked directly at me..
My mind made up, I replied quickly,
‘I’ll be there in half an hour’
