HUNTER

I felt the surge before the Bureau did.

That was the problem with being tied to Kitty the way I was, even if that pulse was faint. Her magic didn’t just exist somewhere out in the world like another supernatural current. I lived under my skin. It threaded itself through my instincts the way a storm pressed against the bones before the thunder arrived.

So when the shadows woke when she was having her lunch, I felt them. The magic inside me responded instantly. It was violent and chaotic. And it was beautiful.

Like the night I’d watched her wipe out the coven by herself, and the night she’d torn through Jasper’s men, I couldn’t help but pause for a moment and feel it. Her power called to mine.

But the magic was also dangerous.

It was the kind the Bureau hunted.

Tanner called minutes later with the report.

“We’ve registered a spike,” he said tightly. “There’s forbidden magic somewhere in the building.”

And then he quietened and reached me through the mindlink instead.

‘I think it’s our queen, Your Majesty.

‘No one makes a move,’ I growled back.

By the time I reached the elevator, Kitty had already started to calm down and was walking out of the building. I released a breath slowly, some of the tension draining from my shoulders.’d seen the fear in her eyes earlier when she nearly lost control in my office. If she’d gone home to regroup, that was the best outcome I could hope for right now. She wouldn’t want me near her. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the luxury of giving her space.

I followed behind the route the taxi had taken, tracking the faint thread of magic that still hummed under my skin. My hands tightened on the wheel when I realised she wasn’t heading towards the apartment. A few minutes later, the neighbourhood I’d driven to confirmed my suspicions. She was going to the gym.

By the time I pulled up outside, I already knew two things. First, the Bureau’s sensors registering her magic spike meant she would be on their radar soon.

Second, she was losing control, but she hadn’t come to me. She’d gone to Nathan.

The scent hit me first, Pine. My jaw tightened as I pushed the door harder than I meant to, the sound echoing sharply through the dusty room. Then I saw them. For a split second, my chest cracked open again.

I hadn’t wanted to confront her like this. I hadn’t wanted to walk in and look territorial when I had no right.

But my beast didn’t care about rights. He surged forward with a iolence that made my vision blur red. Instinct roared through me, demanding I cross the room and rip Nathan away fom her. It took every ounce of control I had not to do it.

This wasn’t about my jealousy. This was about the magic. The power rolling off both of us now was thick enough to taste, and the gym crawled with both our shadows. If the Bureau hadicked up the earlier spike, they’d definitely feel this one,

too.

Nathan released her and stepped back slowly, his gaze meetingine for a brief moment. There was a challenge there, but something else too, Concern. Of course he understood what was happening. He was a rogue born with the same ancient magic in his veins.

Kitty was a disaster waiting to happen.

My attention snapped back to her as the flicker in her eyes changed from fury to fear. The pulse inside my chest answered it instinctively.

Did she feel it too now? Did she understand that I was still hers, ven without her mark on my body?

Her shadows retreated slowly, sinking back into her skin like animal reluctantly returning to its cage. But the tremor in the air remained. I could feel it vibrating between us.

“Kitty,” I said quietly. “I’m not here to force you. But if you don’t control this soon, it won’t end well for anyone.”

And I meant for everyone else. Because if Kitty lost control and pre half the city apart, I already knew I would stand right beside her.

“What is this?” she whispered, gesturing between us. “Why…?”

I had a theory about that. But it was something Kitty was ready to hear, not with the state of us. So I chose to focus on something we could control.

“Your magic triggered the Bureau sensors.”

The Bureau didn’t ignore magical spikes like that. Kitty worked for me; she knew that better than anyone.

“You need to come with me.”

I saw the moment the fear bled out of her eyes. Her shoulders straightened, and that cold mask slid back into place. The look she gave me would have stopped a lesser man where he stood. Hatred. Pain. The two things pulsing the strongest between us.

“Why would I do that?”

Because the thought of anyone treating her like a threat made something murderous wake in my chest. I’d been ready to burn down the kingdoms long before this magic tangled our fates together again.

“The safest place for you right now is by my side.”

She laughed, but it wasn’t a pleasant sound.

“Safe?” she repeated. “You mean monitored?”

“Protected.”

“Controlled,” she growled, her eyes burning into mine. “That’s the reason you switched my job, isn’t it? So you can watch me. Make sure my disgusting bloodline doesn’t make a move. That I stay in line.”

My eyes closed briefly as her words sliced through me,

“If you don’t get on top of this, it won’t just be the Bureau that notices,” I said carefully. “The Bureau is mine; I can still protect you there. But out here, everyone will feel this. Every park, every coven. Every creature that understands power. You won’t be safe,”

“I’ve never been safe a day in my life,” she snapped.

Then she turned away from me completely and walked towards punching bag. I glanced at Nathan. He’d moved to stand against the wall, arms folded, sharp gaze watching the two of us arefully, I saw the moment something clicked behind his

eyes.

His mouth dropped open slightly. And then he closed it again, and the look disappeared,
