The moment I left Kitty’s office, the bond flared and then went quiet.

It wasn’t gone. It would never be gone again. But it was quiet enough that I could feel the effort she was putting into shutting

me out.

I sat at my desk for a long time, replaying those few minutes after she walked into her office.

She’d called me Mr Sterling.

It was exactly the kind of professionalism expected of the Director’s Executive Assistant, but hearing it now felt like someone had reached into my chest and twisted my heart.

With our first bond, Kitty had never been able to hide anything om me. When she was angry, the whole room felt it. When she’d been happy, even with death hanging over our heads, her yes lit up like the sun had taken her form for a few hours.

But today she’d been empty. Controlled.

We were connected-true mates-yet in that growing bond, I fel nothing from her. And that terrified me more than anything. What if she left me?

My phone buzzed on the desk.

“What is it?”

“Sir, we have a problem,” Tanner said.

A chill slid down my spine.

“What kind of problem?”

“There was another spike yesterday,” he said carefully. “It triggered three separate sensors before the readings dropped again.”

I leaned back in my chair and closed my eyes for a moment.

“Where?”

There was a short pause.

“The system flagged one somewhere on the main road out of town, and then two near the scene of the last murder.”

The gym. I already knew that would happen. I rubbed my temple and exhaled softly.

“Has anyone else seen the report?” I asked.

“Just me,”

“Delete it.”

Tanner paused again before he said, “Yes, sir.”

I ran a hand over my face, staring at the phone in front of me. It wasn’t that I couldn’t protect her from the Bureau; that part

was easy. The organisation answered to me; if I wanted something buried, it disappeared. But I didn’t trust anyone else with

her life. The fewer people who knew what she was capable of, the better. I didn’t want her classified as a threat.

Chapter 195

We’d have enough enemies once the rest of the world realised what she truly was.

Still, those were problems I could control. The hardest part wasrotecting her from herself.

I glanced towards the adjoining door, sensing the tight coil of control on the other side. Too much of that and eventually something would snap. But she wouldn’t want to hear that from me.

I looked down at my phone again, already regretting the decision I was about to make. But Kitty came first. My redemption could wait.

I picked it up and sent the message before I could talk myself out of it.

‘She needs to get this under control.”

‘Of course. The reply came quickly, as if he’d been waiting by his phone. ‘I’ll fix it.’

That jealousy coiled in my chest as I glared at the screen. We were true mates, yet Kitty trusted Rivers more than me. My beast stirred restlessly beneath my skin, reacting to my emotion. He hadn’t stopped pining for Kitty even after the snappe bond. I should have realised sooner what this meant.

I pushed him down and pressed the keys harder than necessary

‘She’s mine,’ I typed, and then I deleted it before pressing the key to send it.

I exhaled and started again. Rivers didn’t need that warning. He already seen and guessed everything.

‘The Bureau picked up the power spikes.

‘Noted.’

And that was it. No follow-up message to tell me how he intended to help her stabilise. No statements that he would keep his hands to himself. Who did that bastard think he was? Was I not the king? To text me like that, like I was just a mere afterthought…

My fingers tightened around the phone briefly, and the crack echoed in the quiet room. I dropped it back on the desk and made a mental note to pick up another phone.

The rest of the day went the same. Silence from her office, she didn’t even offer me a cup of coffee again. But that was alright. I hadn’t put her next to me for her to serve me.

At five on the dot, she finally knocked.

“I’m leaving,” she stated.

I stood, pushing the chair back as I watched her cold expression gain. It hadn’t thawed even a little, even after the files I’d handed her. Research and the legal work were where her interes lay, Would she realise that I’d given her the highest clearance at the Bureau? She had access to everything I’d built here.

“I arranged a car-”

“No need,” she said, and then she turned and shut the door.

I sat back heavily, listening to the rustling and shuffling as she packed up her things. And then the clicking of her heels as she walked out of her office. I could picture the look on her face, and I’d bet anything she hadn’t even looked back.

I looked down at the files in front of me, the files I’d have to show her when she was open to hearing me out. The files that had been the reason my parents died. Before the bond, I’d have thrown them in her face, but now….

I clicked the hidden panel in my button drawer. When it slid op, I returned the files to their place and scanned my finger

to lock it. And then I put away the work I hadn’t even touched that day and shut down my computer.
