Chapter 197

The conference room on the twenty-third floor felt sterile.

Too much glass, too much polished steel. Too many people who believed they controlled the world simply because they sat around the expensive table in the room that took up most of the space on the floor.

In the half an hour I had to prepare, I’d learned the roles of the people in the meeting. Their department handled only the highest security clearance cases, threats to national security.

And apparently, I was the threat they were looking for.

Despite the rage swirling in my chest after that elevator ride, Hunter warned me to keep my magic under control and leave the rest to him. I walked in behind him and immediately saw the respect the men at the table gave him. They didn’t even glance my way.

It reminded me of everything I’d faced as an omega. I wasn’t worth even the slightest smile, not even a nod.

I inhaled slowly as we approached the table. Three representatives from National Security sat on one side of the long table, and Tanner on the other. One Lycan, one werewolf, and a vampire. Sharp suits, colder eyes. I felt a chill run down my spine. There was more power sitting in this room than in the whole building combined.

The werewolf was older, watching everything with a calculating gaze. Out of the three, his eyes were the only ones that lingered on me.

Did he know I was his future queen?

A screen glowed on the wall behind them, frozen on a satellite map of the city.

Hunter pulled out a chair beside him.

“Sit.”

The command scraped my nerves, but I sat anyway. I already had the tightest grip on my emotions because the pulse between us hadn’t settled since the elevator. If anything, the tension had only thickened.

“Director Sterling” the older man said. “Thank you for joining us.”

Didn’t they use his de? Or was this because he was a werewolf, refusing to acknowledge the Lycan King?

“You asked for das meeting.” Hunter said, not bothering with pleasantries

The man nodded towards the screen.

“Over the past forty-eight hours, we’ve detected multiple anomalies within the city limits”

The map shafted, and three red markers appeared One over the Bureau one near the road outside touch, and one-

My stomach dropped. The last one was over the gym

The red markers were wide enough to cover more than just the Bureau grounds, but the marker over the gym was speci

The map changed again, showing timestamps. A new red marker appeared over my neighbourhood.

My fingers tightened in the pen I was using to take notes. One would have to be an idiot not to put this puzzle together. I was the only common factor.

“Overnight, the discharge appears more controlled,” the vampire said, “but it’s for longer periods.”

Hunter leaned back slightly in his chair.

“And?”

The vampire frowned at his casual tone.

“And they’re increasing in frequency,” he said.

The screen shifted again and a waveform filled the display. Even if I hadn’t understood the technical data, the pattern was obvious. Each spike was stronger than the last. Was I not controlling it as well as I thought?

“Have you identified the source?” Hunter asked.

“We believe it’s a single individual,” the werewolf said.

My hands tightened again. I moved them under the table and kept my eyes on the screen. The room suddenly felt too

warm.

Still, my heartbeat remained steady, giving nothing away.

The power output suggests something unstable,” the older man said. “Potentially dangerous.”

Why did his gaze flick to me when he said that?

“Even at the height of the dark magic spike, the readings were not this high,” the Lycan said. “We’re recommending immediate containment. Before the subject becomes a threat to civilians.”

Something in my chest twisted. Containment. Capture. Experimentation. Kostas’ words that night rattled in my head.

Defying the Goddess’ will. An abomination. The last white wolf was hung, drawn, and quartered

These people wouldn’t just have the source of the unstable magic, they’d have a white wolt in their hands. A double whammy I was completely screwed.

Hunter’s hand slid under the table beside mine, not touching, but close enough that the bond pulsed. It was steady. Grounding

“Based on what evidence?” he asked

“The energy output”

“That’s not evidence, Hunter said calinly

“It’s an indicator. There were spikes in the temperature in the whole building yesterday, the werewolf said “This panieru suggests escalating instability”

Hunter’s gaze sharpened

“Escalating does not equal hostile.”

The vampire leaned forward.

“If this individual loses control in a populated area-”

“You’re speculating.” Hunter interrupted.

“We’re being cautious.”

“And I’m being practical,” Hunter said, finally sitting forward. “I’m back at my desk. I’ll oversee this investigation personally.”

The older man frowned.

“This involves national security,” he said.

Hunter’s voice dropped slightly.

“Are you suggesting I’m not experienced enough to handle an investigation?”

The room went still. One by one, their gazes dropped, even the vampire’s. I was not aware that the Lycan King’s authority extended even to them.

“Of course not, Your Majesty,” the Lycan agent said, finally using his title.

“Until we find proof that this individual poses a danger to humans, this case does not escalate beyond this room and my jurisdiction.”

The men nodded. I noticed the tick in the werewolf’s jaw.

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Hunter dismissed them and stood to walk out. I followed him to the elevator, my grip still tight on my emotions. When the elevator doors closed, Hunter didn’t say a word. He didn’t have to. I felt his fraying control. Or maybe that was mine.

I walked down the hallway to his office with my head down. My senses were on high alert, catching every tap on a computer. every scrape of a chair, the beeping on digital screens.

His office door closed behind us with a click, my control shattered. My chest tightened painfully. Both Nathan and Hunter had told me how bad my unstable magic could be, but I’d held on to this hope that I could came it in the gym.

“They know,” I whispered.

Hunter turned to me.

“They suspect”

“It’s the same thing”

Shadows flickered along the ceiling I forced them back, just barely. Those agents were still close enough to feet these spikes Goddess, I was going to die Fd resigned myself to the possibility once I rejected Hunter, but to die as a captivet

More shadows rolled out of me. My wolf her ame more alert, pushing forward ready to fight the threat coming frus

Hunter caught my wrist gently. The contact grounded me again I didn’t push him away because the bond was the only thing keeping the darkness inside me from exploding

“You’re fine,” he said quietly

“I’m not.”

My hands trembled. I tried to breathe to calm the panic.

“If they figure it out-”

“They won’t.”

How could he be so calm? If what Nathan said was true, then if they killed me, he would die, too.

“You don’t know that.”

He stepped closer.

“I do.”

The certainty in his voice made something inside me crack. The shadows surged out of me, darkening the office, blocking the morning sunlight filtering through Hunter’s windows.

Hunter cupped the side of my face. His hands were steady, and his emotions pressed gently in the bond. I hated this. hated that he was the only one who could calm me. But if I pushed him away, I would probably not walk out of the building.

The bond felt warm and heavy. And hungry. My anger was still there, and the hurt, but lust overwhelmed it all. Just like in the dream.

My finger twisted into the front of his shirt before I even realised I was moving.

I hate this,” I whispered.

I know.”

Our lips met. The kiss was gentle only for a few seconds before my hunger for him took over. Hunter’s arms wrapped round me as he pressed me back against the door.

broke away from him when I heard the lock click.

They’ll hear us,” I whispered.

Soundproofed, Hunter said, his voice raspy as he brought his head down to me again.

His hands were already lifting my skirt. And then I heard the sound of his zipper In seconds, he’d hitched my leg on his waist, pushed my panties aside, and slid into me.

hadn’t realised how wet I was until I felt him moving inside me. My chest exploded, exposing everything I was trying to ide Heat roared down my veins. The pressure inside me loosened, and the shadows retreated as my worki nanowed up Hunter To his warmth and breath. To the no familiar pulse and the threads that had dug deeper into me than the mate bond we’d first forged had

My head swirled as he thrust slowly, drawing every ounce of pleasure out of every inch he gave one

His body trembled as hard as mine. And then he hit that spos In seconds my eyes rolled to the back of y shattered around him. Hunter tened, and then he followed grunting my name as be spilt is me.

For a moment, nothing else existed.

And then it all came crashing back into me. I shoved at him until he released me. Anger twisted in my chest, along with my disappointment and my disgust.

My shutters fell back into place as I straightened my clothes.

And then I turned and walked to my adjoining door without looking back at him. This bond was dangerous. How could I forget what he did so easily?

I’d give myself the weekend at Mal’s, and then I would come back and reject him. I would never let him touch me again.
