Tuesday morning, I pulled up outside the Bureau gates on my bike. It was a little worse for wear after my crash, but it was still roadworthy. As soon as I did what I had to do, I’d get it repaired and start my new life.
All eyes were on me when I joined the foot traffic through the gates. I couldn’t blame them. While they were all dressed in expensive office wear, I was in my jeans and leather jacket, with my riding boots completing the outfit.
“Sec. She’s coming to work dressed like that because she has the Director’s backing.”
“Isn’t that a slap in the face for the rest of us who follow the rules?”
I didn’t look back when I caught the whispers. My stomach was twisted in knots, so many that I was feeling nauseous. I’d managed to catch a few hours of sleep when I got back to the apartment, but my dreams had been riddled with images of me bleeding from all orifices on Hunter’s office floor after I recited the rejection oath.
And then those images would swap to Hunter on the floor. My heart had broken in both scenarios.
“Shh. Didn’t you hear what happened? Keep your voices down.”
“What do you mean?”
“They’re cleaning up. Firing anyone who’s said something against her.”
That caught my attention. I really doubted that was true; the Bureau was known for being impartial. Even if Hunter promised to use the resources to protect me, the most he’d done so far was take the investigation from the National Security guys.
And that reminded me of that werewolf from that department.
way he’d looked at me across the table, as if he’d already known I was the culprit. Rejecting Hunter and quiting was the best solution.
When I stepped inside, the building quietened. I caught the sideways looks and sneers, the disgust and envy, but none of them said another word. Their eyes followed me through the security barriers to the elevator.
“How is she better than me?” someone whispered. “She looks like trash.”
My first instinct was to turn and rip the woman’s face off, but I shoved it back and kept my gaze forward. True mate bond or not, I would never let it dictate my actions again.
“Shh,”
someone said. “She had someone from Legal fired for this. Keep your mouth shut.”
Once I stepped into the executive elevator, I sagged against the back wall. My palms became sweaty, and my heart started to race. My wolf prowled inside me, her chest rumbling with her rage. She didn’t want this, even after everything we’d been through. But I could do this. I should have done it the second I knew the bond was strengthening again.
Waiting this long to reject Hunter would always be my greatest shame.

The door opened, and Hunter’s sandalwood and orange blossom scent drifted to my nose. I inhaled greedily, even though I hated myself for it. But his scent grounded me, and settled the nerves in my stomach.
I bypassed the door to my new office until I stood in front of Hunter’s. He would have sensed me the second I approached the building, the same way his presence was like a beacon to me. The bond hummed faintly, already pulling me closer, tightening around my ribs.
He was there on the other side, just waiting for me. I could hear his heart beating in sync with mine, and feel the air charging with energy. And I knew the longer I left it, the stronger my reactions to him would be. I hadn’t dared to shut him out again after my breakthrough, so he could feel everything.
I took a breath and knocked once.
“Come in.”
His voice was steady, even though his chaotic emotions rolled down the bond. The moment I opened the door, his eyes snapped to me, and his posture shifted. He was behind his desk, his sleeves rolled, top button undone, but there were no papers in front of him, as if he’d been just waiting.
“Kitty,” he said quietly.
My pulse jumped. Without me actively shutting him out, just the sound of his voice did that to me. I closed the door behind me, and the click echoed in the quiet room. The soundproofed room. My mind immediately took me back to days before, against this very door, when I’d lost control. My pulse raced again, but I shoved the images out of my head.
“I need to talk to you,” I said.
He stood slowly, his shoulders rigid, and I felt the tension rolling off him in waves. Even if he didn’t know what I was there to do, he could sense something was wrong through the bond. When he walked around his desk, the bond flared and nearly undid me. I forced myself to stay where I was, even as every instinct urged me forward.
“This isn’t working,” I said quickly. “We will never work.”
Hunter stilled. His tension ramped up; I could feel his body vibrating with it. Then he inhaled before he walked to the front of his desk and leaned against it.
“Maybe not now,” he said. “Since you’re open to talking now, if you let me-”
“I need to talk,” I emphasised.
My body was already heating up from his presence, from the way his muscles bulged as he leaned back on the desk, and the way his gaze focused on me. Whatever came out of his mouth would just be excuses. There was nothing he could say that would justify exterminating my whole family, or how he believed the world was better rid of our ‘disgusting’ bloodline.
“I could never live with myself if I let this bond settle,” I said. “I’ll never be able to hold my head up in my kingdom.”
Hunter’s expression changed, and he straightened.

“Kitty,” he said, a warning in his tone. “We’re fated. There’s nothing we can do to change that. I don’t want to change that, because you were mine even before this stupid bond.”
So he knew the bond was stupid. He knew that without it, I would not be standing in front of him.
“But I don’t want you, Hunter Sterling. I don’t choose you.”
Even as I said the lie, his pain slammed into me.
“I could never love a man who thinks I’m disgusting. A man who thinks it’s okay that almost all my family perished.”
“I don’t. Kitty, those were words said in the heat of the moment,” he said, stepping toward me and reaching for my hands. “I’m not heartless. I know the cost of that feud better than anyone.”
“Then you agree,” I said, pulling my hands from his grip. “We won’t work.”
Hunter stepped back, his eyes searching my face.
“What are you going to do?” he asked.
“I’m going to reject you.”
The bond exploded. I hadn’t recited the oath, but heat tore violently through my chest. My wolf howled, her claws digging into my chest, and the air in the room thickened. Lights flickered above me, and my shadows pushed out of me without my command.
Hunter froze only for a moment before he gripped my shoulders and forced me to meet his gaze.
“No. One or both of us will die,” he said. “Don’t be so foolish, Kitty. We have a bigger problem on our hands
“I know I could die. I know I could wither away until there is not g left of me,” I said through my teeth, remembering my parents when the coven had taken over the cas. “But I would rather risk that than be tied to you for the rest of my life.”
Hunter released me and staggered back as if I’d punched him. Pain lanced through me, his emotions mixing with mine. It wasn’t just the emotions; it was physical, as if just saying that word out loud was ripping something apart. The threads hummed, digging in deeper, resisting me.
“Don’t,” Hunter whispered.
My claws extended, and I held my palm up. All I had to do was cut it and say the words. The oath that was never spoken once someone found their fated mate.
I would be the first, because even though I longed for what I’d believed I could have with Hunter, I hated him with the same intensity.
Before I could slash myself, Hunter pulled me closer, his grip firm on my wrists. The bond roared as heat flooded my veins, confusing everything. Anger, fear, and desire tangled until I couldn’t tell which was
stronger.

The temperature dipped, but the shadows didn’t slam into the walls. Instead, they swirled around us, almost as if they were guarding us.
“You’re not doing this,” he said.
“I, Katerina Lordswood, reje-”
His mouth crashed into mine before I could say anything. Like the other day, the kiss wasn’t gentle. It was angry and desperate, and the bond hummed wildly, drowning out my pain with something equally overwhelming. Those threads dug deeper into me, and my magic weaved between them, strengthening them when I wanted the opposite. The air in the office shifted again, the energy around us crackling as my power responded to the clash of emotion.
This wasn’t supposed to happen.
My hands fisted his shirt to shove him away, but the second my hand touched his skin, I was lost. Completely gone. Like the bond had won and I was under its control again.
Hunter released my mouth and trailed kisses along the side of my neck as his hands worked to free me of my jeans.
“I’m not letting you go, Kitty,” he said as he sat my bare ass on the edge of his desk.
I was too far gone to respond when he thrust into me, and became completely incoherent when he lowered his mouth to the crook of my neck again, right where his mark used to be.
