The night air hit me the moment I stepped outside. It felt too cold against my overheated skin. It should have grounded me, but it didn’t. The restlessness inside me only sharpened, and my wolf pressed closer to the surface, her attention fixed on the darkness beyond the streetlights.

I didn’t bother with the bike. The nearest forest was far, right on the outskirts of the city, but I needed to run. I needed to burn this hunger out of me.

The city blurred as I moved, keeping to the shadows, my senses stretching wider with every block I put between myself and the apartment. But the longer I ran, the greater the hunger became. It pulsed inside me. The adrenaline still pumped in my blood, and red tinged the edges of my vision.

Every sound became distinct. The hum of traffic. The scrape of shoes on pavements. The uneven rhythm of a heartbeat somewhere ahead. My wolf lifted her head, her interest engaged and I followed the pull without questioning it.

A man turned into the alley before I reached the corner. He was lone.

My steps slowed automatically, and my breathing evened out as nstinct took over. The scent reached me first. Sweat, cheap alcohol, stale smoke, and human. Just an ordinary man. My fingers curled at my sides as I stepped into the alley after him. He hadn’t noticed me.

The alley was narrow and dimly lit by a flickering bulb near the exit. He stopped halfway down, fumbling with his phone while he muttered something about a ‘fucking whore’ under his breath. I stayed in the shadows, watching him as the tension in my muscles coiled tighter.

I knew this wasn’t about hunger. This was about the release that he deer hadn’t given me. The clean kill hadn’t satisfied the itch under my skin. I needed something louder.

Something that fought back.

The thought cooled my blood a little, but I didn’t push it away. My mind was quiet, blissfully numb for the first time since I left Hunter’s office, focused only on the hunt. On the way my blood pumped, and the anticipation running through my body.

My boot scraped lightly against the concrete, and the man turne, startled, his eyes widening when he saw me. His fear flared instantly, and I inhaled deeply. My wolf surged forward in response.

I knew what made him so terrified of me. My eyes must have given me away. That or the shadows that kept flickering beside me, disappearing before they were fully formed.

“Hey-” he started.

I moved before he could finish. My hand closed around his thro, slamming him back against the wall hard enough to rattle the metal door beside us. His phone clattered to the ground, and the woman he’d been trying to call finally picked up. I heard her words clearly.

“I told you not to call me again,” she shouted, “Next time I’ll call he police.”

“Help,” the man wheezed, but the woman had already hung up.

He clawed at my wrist, panic flooding his scent, and something led inside me at the sound he made

There it was. The missing piece.

I didn’t tighten my grip, I just held him there, watching the fear build in his bloodshot eyes and feeling his pulse hammering against my palm. The bond stirred slightly, like Hunter was responding to the spike in my emotions, but I shoved him away

instinctively. This hunt wasn’t his; it was mine.

“Scream for me.” I said quietly, my voice deeper as my wolf pressed even closer.

I sounded deranged even to my own ears. But this hunger, this need, had grown so much that I was already salivating. My vision was almost completely red.

The man struggled harder, and his heels scraped uselessly against the ground.

“I don’t want any trouble,” he whispered.

Neither did I. But the urge clawed at me, demanding more. My wolf pressed again, her teeth itching, and I leaned closer, inhaling the sharp tang of his fear. The sound of his breathing grew ragged, and my grip tightened without conscious thought.

The bond pulsed again, stronger this time, and a flicker of awareness cut through the haze. I sensed concern and anger, but the emotions felt distant, like they were just echoes of what they should have been.

But my shadows flickered again behind me. I felt them growing ooming over us, their low growls becoming deeper. The man’s eyes widened as he looked behind me.

And then it finally came.

That scream.

That sound edged with so much terror that my toes curled. It cu through the night as he froze under my grip. His heartbeat stuttered under my fingertips, beating like a symphony. All I had to do was just flick my wrist-

I released him abruptly as my head cleared. He collapsed forward, coughing and wheezing as he scrambled backwards on his hands and feet.

I stepped away, the horror of what I’d almost done sinking into me slowly. The itch under my skin remained, because I hadn’t gone far enough. The release I’d expected never came.

That thought chilled me right down to the bone. I’d become a monster. A fucking monster.

The man didn’t wait. He staggered to his feet and ran, disappearing into the street without looking back. I watched him go with my chest rising and falling slowly, and my wolf still pacing restlessly. And I realised that thing inside me had let him go

on purpose.

Because he wasn’t enough.

My gaze lifted towards the rooftops and the city stretching out around me. Somewhere out there, something stronger waited for me. Something that would fight and give me the release I craved.

Maybe this was why people were already after me. I craved dark ess. I craved the hunt. I’d used my strength to hurt someone instead of protect them, and that wasn’t something an Alpha Queen was supposed to do.

The bond throbbed again, and this time I felt Hunter’s presence pushing closer. I expected that weight to settle on me again, but it didn’t come.

Because even though my head was clear, I wasn’t ready to stop. still wanted to satisfy my hunger. And my instincts screamed that the big hunt was very close.

And this time, I was sure I wouldn’t stop.
